All army books updated to 3.1!

After several months of toiling, I'm glad to announce that all army books are now updated to 3.1! It took quite a lot longer than planned as I also went through each book and fixed a bunch of grammar issues and added rules clarifications. Like I mentioned in my previous post, these updates have only been announced on Discord, in case anyone thinks I have been absent for several months doing nothing.

While working on this update wave, there were also some issues that needed addressing regarding Impact Hits and Always Strikes First, which have been mostly fixed. Models without regular attacks (like Chariots) still have Impact Hits, whereas Monsters and similar now have their Impact Hits be represented by their regular attacks, often with Mighty Blow on the charge instead. This way, there's no weird inconsistencies why some models attacking their horns get Impact Hits, and some do not.

However, with the 3.2 version of the game (expected early next year) I plan on making it so that Stomp occur as Impact Hits when charging, representing the mass of these creatures without giving them extra hits. Likewise, long weapons like spears, pikes and lances will get the Always Strikes First special rule (without the re-rolls) instead of Initiative bonuses. So ASF in this case represents their physical reach, while Initiative represents reaction speed.

As a result, you might find that a few things in the patch notes are not 100% correct when it comes to the pricing of some core units with options for spears, as some have spears as part of their base cost and free spears as an option, whereas other are paying for spears at a cheaper base cost. There are also a few instances where the patch notes mention things that are already in my working document for 3.2, but not in the 3.1 pdf. This will be fixed in 3.2, along with more bug fixes.

Rather than needing to wait several months for each book to be updated to 3.2 once the main rules are out, I'm planning on releasing everything at the same time. As a result, there likely won't be any other update posts until then, though I will be posting planned changes on the Discord server as usual.

Thanks for sticking with me folks, especially my Patreons whose support makes this whole thing worth it!

Warhammer - Daemons of Chaos 1.71 out now!

This ended up being a very large "hot fix", but that was expected since the previous release was more or less a beta, as mentioned. The major changes here mainly the removal of Loci, with the effects being moved to Magic Standards instead (and with a points decrease to boot). This means you can no longer stack bonuses from both standard and Loci (unless you make your herald a BSB), but it also means that the Loci bonuses are tied to the unit instead of a character and thus harder to remove. I have also increased the magic banner allowance for all core units to 50 pts, thus allowing them a much wider range of banner options. Loci effects have also been given to the Blood Throne and Exalted Seeker Chariot for no additional cost.

Other than that, you also have quite a bit of adjustments to existing magic items, and several characters and units have seen some points decreases. Overall, this should put Daemons in a bit of a better spot than before.

Patch Notes:

  • A Daemon of Tzeentch has the Hatred (Daemons of Nurgle) special rule and a 6+ Ward save.
  • Summoned from Beyond: If the marker is under a unit or impassable terrain, place it next to the closest edge of the unit/terrain.
  • Adjusted the Strength and scatter distances in Reigns of Chaos.
  • Removed Loci, turned most of them into Magic Standards instead.
  • Grandfather Nurgle's Circle of Life: For each unsaved Wound caused, one friendly unit within 6" of the caster instantly recovers 1 Wounds' worth of models slain earlier in the battle, just like a summoning spell.
  • Removed Massive Stature.
  • Extreme Contagion: All enemy units within 6" of the Daemon at the start of any close combat phase suffer D6 Hits that Wound on a 5+ and Ignores Armour saves. This has no effect on Daemons of Nurgle.
  • Invigorated by Pain: The Daemon gains +1 Attack for each unsaved Wound they have lost on their starting profile.
  • Harvester of Skulls costs 20 pts.

Warhammer - Daemons of Chaos 1.7 out now!

Sorry for the long wait folks, life/baby got in the way again; and I had 20 full pages of feedback notes to go through. There are a lot of changes here, and some I'm sure will be controversial - so consider this somewhat of a beta since I'm sure there will be another update following this one pretty soon.

First up though, you will notice the layout is completely different; it's now no longer sorted by god but rather by category only, meaning that there are a lot fewer headings to sort through. So while it makes it a bit fiddlier to create a mono-god list, it's now easier to make a mixed list, and less of a headache to read the table of contents.

As for the rules changes themselves; the biggest one is a slight nerf to their ward save. In 7th edition they had a 5+ save which was negated by magical attacks; in 8th edition they got a 5+ ward no matter what. I've chosen to give them an in-between - a 5+ ward that becomes a 6+ ward against magical attacks. This means they work more like they do in the lore, and gives their opponent a bit more counter-play.

However, on the plus side, they now have a new army special rule: Summoned from Beyond - this allows the unit to appear anywhere on the table following the rules for Ambushers, similar to Dwarf Miners and Tomb Kings units. This allows Daemon Core units to arrive anywhere on the battlefield, adding more versatile gameplay into the mix.

A third major change is the return of the Reign of Chaos table - sort of. Rather than being a random effect, it's now tied to the Daemonic Alignment of your general. This incentivizes sticking to a mono-god army a bit more, and punishes mixing daemons that hate each other. This probably won't have a huge effect on the battle, but is mainly meant to offset the detriment of not being able to use the general's Inspiring Presence rule for Daemons of other alignments.

A forth larger change is that of magic items - you can now take multiples of the same gift in your army, and the army can also take magic items from the common rulebook, just like other armies, opening a lot more combinations for your characters.

Other than that; you have the usual changes to magic items and daemonic gifts intended to improve the balance between them; as well as a few new toys to play with. Overall the goal has not been to make the army stronger, but just to balance them out a bit better and offer some new tools. Hope you enjoy the changes overall, and many thanks to my Patreons for your continued support!

Daemons of Chaos 1.6 (beta) out now!

That took a bit longer than planned, which is hardly a surprise to people that have been following the pretty long discussions on the Discord server! This ended up being a much larger update than just adding a few new units, with changes to their army special rules and the inclusion of a ton of new Magic Items, Daemonic Gifts and new units. I have also sorted the army list by God allegiance rather than just unit type to make it easier for mono-god players to find their units. This list also includes all magic items and special characters that were previously in the expansions. Anyway, hope you enjoy the rules so far, and huge thanks to the Patreon supporters who inspire me to keep me going!

This update changes the following:

  • Daemonic Instability: Daemonic units are Unbreakable. However, when a unit of Daemons loses a combat it must take a Daemonic Instability test. This works like a normal Break test, except that for every point they fail the test by, the unit suffers one additional Wound with no saves allowed. Removed results of double 1 and double 6.
  • Added Daemonic Animosity army special rule. If there is a Daemonic unit within 6" of another Daemonic unit belonging to a different God those units suffer a -1 Leadership penalty. However, Daemons of Khorne and Slaanesh, or Tzeentch and Nurgle, respectively, suffer a -2 penalty to their Leadership if within 6" of each other instead.
  • Reworked Reign of Chaos table to only have 6 results, no longer tied to the Winds of Magic roll. 1 and 6 is a buff/nerf to their Daemonic Instability. 2-5 can only target a single unit on each side, but does so automatically.
  • Added a ton of new Magic Items and Powers from Age of Sigmar and 8th edition (they now have around twice as many).
  • Enemy units in base contact with a Daemon of Nurgle suffer a -1 penalty to their Weapon Skill.
  • Daemon of Slaanesh gives AP(1). Each To Hit roll of 6 generates an additional Attack. These additional Attacks cannot generate further attacks.
  • New Hero: Exalted Daemon
  • New Hero: Sloppity Bilepiper
  • New Hero: Spoilpox Scrivener
  • New Core Unit: Brimstone Horrors
  • New Core Unit: Imp Swarm
  • New Special Unit: Daemon Brutes

  • Massive Stature: Monstrous Infantry only. The Daemon becomes a Monster. In addition, it gains +1 Wound. Costs 45 pts.
  • Skull Totem: The unit carrying the Skull Totem gain +2 Movement to any March moves it makes and do not need to test to be able to March due to nearby enemies. Costs 15 pts.

Large hotfix wave out now!

Following on the update wave, here are all the bug fixes/changes based on feedback. Minor things like spellings errors or small rules clarifications are not mentioned in the patch list.

MAIN RULEBOOK:

  • Removed "lone" from the following sentence: Characters that are Infantry follow the rules for Skirmishers. Characters that are Cavalry follow the rules for Fast Cavalry.
  • A unit must take a Panic test immediately if it loses 25% or more of the Unit Strength with which it started the phase.
  • Cavalry without a split profile can make up to two supporting attacks.
  • Ridden monsters follow all the Split Profile rules for Cavalry.
  • Cavalry, monstrous cavalry, chariots and shrines that enter marshland fail their Dangerous Terrain tests on a 1 or 2, rather than a 1.
  • Unlike other magic items; Wizards can take up to two Arcane Items. If they do so, one of their Arcane items must be marked as "one use only". Note that they may not take two "one use only" items.
  • Fear: If the Unit Strength of all Fear-causing models is double or more that of the total Unit Strength of all enemy units in base contact, the Combat Resolution score is increased by +2.
  • Destroy Magic Scroll: On a 4+, the spell is destroyed and the enemy caster loses access to the spell for the rest of the game (note that this has no effect on Innate Bound spells).
  • Cavalry have to take Dangerous Terrain tests if they move march, charge, flee or pursue over anything other than open ground or hills – Battlefield Terrain for more details.
  • Clarified that Stomp hits are randomised like Automatic Hits.
  • Stupidity: In addition, Wizards cannot attempt to cast/dispel or channel power dice or dispel dice.
  • Wizarding Hat: The wearer is treated as being a Level 2 Wizard who can use a randomly chosen spell lore from any of the Eight Lores of Magic at the start of the game. However, they also have the Stupidity special rule. Note that they may not choose any Arcane Items. Cost 50 pts.
  • A model can make a supporting attack if it is in the second rank and directly behind a friendly model that is itself fighting an enemy in base contact.
  • Note that Magical Resistance does not offer protection against Miscasts.
  • Any Swarm base that is hit by a template attack suffers Multiple Wounds (D6) rather than 1.
  • Mixed Unit: Note that if the unit has the Expendable, Swiftstride or Vanguard special rules, this also applies to the Handlers.

  • Braid of Bordeleaux is an enchanted item.
