All army books updated to 3.1!

After several months of toiling, I'm glad to announce that all army books are now updated to 3.1! It took quite a lot longer than planned as I also went through each book and fixed a bunch of grammar issues and added rules clarifications. Like I mentioned in my previous post, these updates have only been announced on Discord, in case anyone thinks I have been absent for several months doing nothing.

While working on this update wave, there were also some issues that needed addressing regarding Impact Hits and Always Strikes First, which have been mostly fixed. Models without regular attacks (like Chariots) still have Impact Hits, whereas Monsters and similar now have their Impact Hits be represented by their regular attacks, often with Mighty Blow on the charge instead. This way, there's no weird inconsistencies why some models attacking their horns get Impact Hits, and some do not.

However, with the 3.2 version of the game (expected early next year) I plan on making it so that Stomp occur as Impact Hits when charging, representing the mass of these creatures without giving them extra hits. Likewise, long weapons like spears, pikes and lances will get the Always Strikes First special rule (without the re-rolls) instead of Initiative bonuses. So ASF in this case represents their physical reach, while Initiative represents reaction speed.

As a result, you might find that a few things in the patch notes are not 100% correct when it comes to the pricing of some core units with options for spears, as some have spears as part of their base cost and free spears as an option, whereas other are paying for spears at a cheaper base cost. There are also a few instances where the patch notes mention things that are already in my working document for 3.2, but not in the 3.1 pdf. This will be fixed in 3.2, along with more bug fixes.

Rather than needing to wait several months for each book to be updated to 3.2 once the main rules are out, I'm planning on releasing everything at the same time. As a result, there likely won't be any other update posts until then, though I will be posting planned changes on the Discord server as usual.

Thanks for sticking with me folks, especially my Patreons whose support makes this whole thing worth it!

Warhammer - Skaven 1.91 out now!

Another fairly small update here. The lore attributes have been changed to be more effective against enemy targets, but cannot stack for balance reasons. Likewise, I've done a bit of tinkering with the spell levels and effects.

Plague Priests have been separated into fighter and caster characters like they are in the Lustria campaign, instead of being hybrids. Skrolk can still cast spells though the Liber Bubonicus (which fits his lore as well), but otherwise Nurglitch is now the dedicated caster special character for Pestilens.

As for new things; the Brood Terror (really wish GW could have been more creative with the name...) from AoS adds another rare choice, and you have two new special characters from AoS as well.

Hope you enjoy the update, and thanks for your continued support! Next up: Warriors of Chaos!

Patch notes:

  • Clan Enmity: Characters from one of these Clans may not join a unit containing models from another Clan.

  • If one or more spells from the Lore of Plague affects an enemy unit, the target suffers -1 to their Weapon Skill and Initiative (to a minimum of 1) until the start of the caster's next magic phase.
  • If one or more spells from the Lore of Stealth affects an enemy unit, the target suffers a -1 penalty to their armour saves until the start of the caster's next magic phase.
  • Warpstorm affects enemy units on a 3+.
  • Cloud of Corruption is a lvl 4 spell, 12+ to cast.
  • Wither is a lvl 3 spell, 11+ to cast.
  • The Brass Orb does not ignore Regeneration, does not centre on the bearer if a 1 is rolled. Place the small round template with its centre anywhere within range. If the attacks hits, resolve the damage as normal. If the attack misses, the template scatters D6".
  • Staff of Rightful Supremacy costs 20 pts.
  • New Magic Items: Icon Of Great-Total Supremacy, Warpstone Innards

Warhammer - Skaven 1.9 (beta) out now!

Quite a few changes here, but nothing too major. First up; there will be more units added in a few weeks when the Age of Sigmar Battletome for Skaven is released, so you can look forward to some more stuff then!

As for some of the bigger changes with this update, Life is Cheap is now an army special rule like in 6th ed, meaning you are free to blast into combat regardless of what units are involved rather than just Skavenslaves.

The other major change is weapon teams, who are now stand-alone Special units. This means you have to invest more points for regular troops in core, but your weapon teams are no longer limited by the amount of infantry units you have. In order to keep gunlines in check though, there is a limit on how many duplicate weapon teams with missile weapons you can take.

Lastly, Stormfiends are now Monstrous Creatures as better suitable for their size, and are not taken in units. This means they are individually more powerful, but are not as overwhelming to deal with as they were previously in units, making them more of a support unit than elite shock troops.

As usual, many thanks to my Patreons for your continued support, and hope you enjoy the update!

 Patch Notes:

  • All Skaven models can voluntarily target ranged attacks (including templates) at enemy units engaged in close combat with other friendly units even if they are further than 4" away. However, if they do so, they will hit their own troops on To Hit rolls of both 1's and 2's rather than just 1's.
  • Anytime a weapon that uses Unstable Ammunition scores a result of 1 on its roll To Hit, roll another dice. On a following roll of 1-2 the gun misfires and the shooter suffer the hit themselves.
  • New Weapon: Ratling Pistol
  • New Weapon: Warpvolt Obliterator
  • New Mount: Gnaw-beast
  • Grey Seers have no Warpstone Tokens by default. Cost 200 pts. Can take up to 5.
  • Deafening Peals includes Shrines.
  • Daemonic: A Verminlord has the Magical Attacks and Unbreakable special rules. In addition, they have a 5+ Ward save which gets reduced to a 6+ Ward save against Magical Attacks. However, if a Verminlord loses a round of close combat it must take a Daemonic Instability test. This works like a normal Break test, except that for every point it fails the test by, it suffers one additional Wound with no saves allowed. The Daemonic Instability test can use Inspiring Presence and/or Hold Your Ground as normal.
  • To throw the Scry-orb, place the small round template with its centre anywhere within 12" and line of sight of the Verminlord Warpseer – it scatters D3".
  • Warlock Masters/Engineers may take up to 3/1 Warpstone Tokens.
  • Added multiple new spells to the Magic Lores.
  • Added multiple new Magic Items. Tweaked the rules and costs on several existing items.
  • Moved some Wargear to Magic Items. Wargear no longer counts towards Magic Item allowance. Limited the amount that can be taken by a single character.
  • Assassins may take slings.
  • Plague Priests may not take mounts.
  • Spears for Clanrats cost 0.5 pts.
  • Stormvermin Leader may take a Warplock Pistol.
  • Weapon Teams are now Special Units. Each Warpfire Thrower, Ratling Gun, Warpvolt Scourger and Poisoned Wind Mortar counts as the same Special choice for the purpose of taking duplicate units. Reworked the results on the misfire charts slightly.
  • Warp-grinders must deploy with any friendly Infantry unit.
  • New Unit: Warpvolt Scourgers
  • Skavenslaves pay 2 pts for polearms and slings.
  • The unit must include one Pawleader for every 20 Skavenslaves. Cost 15 pts.
  • Night Runners are Skirmishers by default. Can replace throwing weapons with slings for 2 pts.
  • Giant Rats have Unit Size 10+.
  • Plague Disciples: A unit of Plague Censer Bearers within 3" of a friendly units of Plague Monks may use the "Look Out, Sir" rule as if they were characters. In addition, if the Plague Censer Bearers are within 6" of a Plague Furnace they have the Stubborn special rule.

Large hotfix wave out now!

Following on the update wave, here are all the bug fixes/changes based on feedback. Minor things like spellings errors or small rules clarifications are not mentioned in the patch list.

MAIN RULEBOOK:

  • Removed "lone" from the following sentence: Characters that are Infantry follow the rules for Skirmishers. Characters that are Cavalry follow the rules for Fast Cavalry.
  • A unit must take a Panic test immediately if it loses 25% or more of the Unit Strength with which it started the phase.
  • Cavalry without a split profile can make up to two supporting attacks.
  • Ridden monsters follow all the Split Profile rules for Cavalry.
  • Cavalry, monstrous cavalry, chariots and shrines that enter marshland fail their Dangerous Terrain tests on a 1 or 2, rather than a 1.
  • Unlike other magic items; Wizards can take up to two Arcane Items. If they do so, one of their Arcane items must be marked as "one use only". Note that they may not take two "one use only" items.
  • Fear: If the Unit Strength of all Fear-causing models is double or more that of the total Unit Strength of all enemy units in base contact, the Combat Resolution score is increased by +2.
  • Destroy Magic Scroll: On a 4+, the spell is destroyed and the enemy caster loses access to the spell for the rest of the game (note that this has no effect on Innate Bound spells).
  • Cavalry have to take Dangerous Terrain tests if they move march, charge, flee or pursue over anything other than open ground or hills – Battlefield Terrain for more details.
  • Clarified that Stomp hits are randomised like Automatic Hits.
  • Stupidity: In addition, Wizards cannot attempt to cast/dispel or channel power dice or dispel dice.
  • Wizarding Hat: The wearer is treated as being a Level 2 Wizard who can use a randomly chosen spell lore from any of the Eight Lores of Magic at the start of the game. However, they also have the Stupidity special rule. Note that they may not choose any Arcane Items. Cost 50 pts.
  • A model can make a supporting attack if it is in the second rank and directly behind a friendly model that is itself fighting an enemy in base contact.
  • Note that Magical Resistance does not offer protection against Miscasts.
  • Any Swarm base that is hit by a template attack suffers Multiple Wounds (D6) rather than 1.
  • Mixed Unit: Note that if the unit has the Expendable, Swiftstride or Vanguard special rules, this also applies to the Handlers.

MAGIC ITEMS:

  • Braid of Bordeleaux is an enchanted item.
  • Sigil of Asuryan: In addition, the spell is destroyed and the enemy caster loses access to the spell for the rest of the game (note that this has no effect on Innate Bound spells).
  • Grand Banner of Clan Superiority: The unit carrying the Grand Banner of Clan Superiority gains +D3 combat resolution bonus if they have more ranks than each enemy unit in base contact.
  • The Bronze Armour of Zhrakk gives the wearer the Animated Construct special rule (though they may still march). However, no other model may use the model's Leadership.
  • The Helm of Commandment gives the wearer a 6+ armour save. In addition, if the wearer is not in combat, one friendly Undead unit within 12" may use their unmodified Weapon Skill instead of their own in close combat.
