After playing the army last weekend (ended in a massacre victory for me, yay!), I looked over the points costs for several units, and noticed they were still priced after the Empire book rather than the meta. So this update changes the following:
- Katanas now allow re-rolling 1's To Wound (two-handed only). This is to give basic samurai a little bit more punch in combat, while retaining the katanas feel as a superior cutting weapon, as opposed to a piercing one.
- Samurai Warriors, Ashigaru and Onna Bushi -1 pt.
- Red Devils +2 pts (did a mistake last time I did their pts cost).
- Ryujin renamed Mizuchi, -50 pts, no longer Fly.
- Sashimonos -15pts, only gives +1 rank for steadfast, not combat resolution.
- Kensai -10 pts.
- Invocation of the Kami only gives +1 to cast rather than D3, works on doubles instead of 6's.
- Mikoshi Shrines are now infantry and may join units. All blessings are now bound spells.
- Hitomi Gozen is now infantry, can choose warhorse as an option. She no longer has a bow, only her naginata.
Look at the Ryujin again on pg. 75 you have Ryujin listed in the mini story...
ReplyDeleteSorry I point these out Mathias. I really love your books. I hope this doesn't discourage you. These are great and I hope I am helping...
That's not an error, Ryujin is a Mizuchi, only the greatest of them. It's a name, not a creature type, in this case ;)
DeleteI do appreciate pointing out clear errors though, it's practically impossible to see them all myself!
Another small typo in the Amazons Army List, Jaguars are listed as Infantry instead of War Beasts.
ReplyDeleteThanks, fixed.
DeleteGot another in the Albion book, under Youngbloods it has "May upgrade one Woad Raider to a FÃochmhar, musician etc"
DeleteFirst things first I'm so glad that you took the time and effort to make and continue to tweak the Nippon book.
ReplyDeleteI feel like stock samurai are, even at -1 point, horrendously overpriced. Kenjutsu is a heck of a rule, but it only matters if they get kills. The Samurai still fail in comparison to the lowly spear elf, who is rarely taken due to his poor performance for the cost. This is not to say that you can't "make" good samurai. Halberds and great weapons and the right clan mon can do wonders to make these guys decent... but I'd never consider taking bare bones Samurai.
This leads me to believe that Katanas are too weak and that the base cost of Samurai is too high, and the weapon option costs are too low. I'd probably drop the cost of Samurai another point, add armor piercing to Katanas to distinguish them as something other than "hand weapon and shield only worse" and then raise the price of Naginata and no-dachi by 1 point.
While I will admit that they are a bit of an investment, they are not actually overpriced. Their stats are worth 5 pts, their heavy armour 2 pts, and kenjutsu and way of the warrior are worth 1 pt each = 9 pts. I don't charge them for their katanas at all anymore actually. I don't want to make katanas super weapons either, they aren't really more effective than a normal sword, it's more down to the fighting style that they use. Naginatas and great weapons doesn't need to be more expensive considering the samurai themselves cost so much. For no-dachi, you lose both the ward and have to pay +2 pts, effectively making it a 3 pts difference already.
DeleteAny chance the Shugenja could have mount options? It would interesting to create a completely mounted army.
ReplyDeleteShugenja are never really portrayed with mounts, not have I seen any fitting models for that. So at the moment, there are no plans for mounts for them.
