Having played Cathay since 8th edition, they feel weaker compared to a few years ago:
ReplyDelete- Their only special rule Iron discipline is underwhelming, especially compared to old Griffon Banner. Generally fails to compensate for their relative weakness/low leadership, especially given Commander units that lack morale-boosting abilities
- Dragonblades being Str 3 makes them poor choices compared to other special units like Ogres, Field Engineers, or even the cheaper but stronger Imperial Guard. Base Str 3 for their "elite infantry" is not great
- The only way Dragonblades are halfway decent is using Strength of the Heavens, but since it is no longer Remains in Play (along with its counterpart) that is much more difficult to maintain
- General lack of reliable S5/S6 "can opener" options outside of artillery or Monsters (cannot equip Great Weapons outside of Ogres/heroes)
- Despite being an artillery-heavy faction, no way to increase BS of Warmachines like Empire or Dawi
- Heavy reliance on strength in numbers severely decreases unit maneuverability and tactical flexibility, which partially negates usefulness of Strategists.
