New large Araby update out now!

There we go, finished the new version of Araby! No huge changes in terms of rules, but I've removed Dibbukim and Imams in order to streamline the basic warriors a bit and avoid having to deal with too many special rules, and some points costs have gone down along with some minor stat changes. Holy War also works a bit differently now.

The book has been given a new more dynamic cover which feels more in line with the 8th ed covers, and have new page background as well, along with plenty of new artwork. I've removed a couple of pages from "the Arabyans" chapter, but have increased the page count for their history and geography instead. I've also given them a new map which shows all of Araby, along with a lot more details.
File size is also down to less than 9MB.

Anway, enjoy!

  1. As an araby player, I must say:

    1.- The book is gorgeous
2.- Great to see genies finally on their own, I love that.
3.- I would keep the dibbukims and specially the imams, those options made arabian warriors really unique and fluffy, it wasn't hard to keep track of their special rules. Now they feel just like the next empire lancers :(

  2. 1. Thanks!
    2. They were actually on their own in the last update as well ;)
    3. There are several reasons why I removed them. I didn't want the warriors to be too much of a mainstay unit of the vain of Skaven clanrats, they are more there to bulk up your battleline, giving you a wall for your specialized units to play around.
The Dibbukim as well felt like they were a bit repetitive with the Dervishes and Bladedancers, both of which also uses two hand weapons, and with the changes to Holy War, having the Imam giving the unit Hatred feels a bit redundant.
I might be possible to include as same-page unit upgrades as the warriors with simpler, different rules through. If you have any suggestions for them, I'm all ears.

  3. Maybe Imams could let the warrior's unit re-roll failed panic test or even break test like a bsb. Another option could be that Imams do give hatred to his unit, but, in the turn that Holy War is activated, warriors also get +1 to hit or reroll failed to wound rolls (I think this changes could be implemented with an adecuate point increase to the Imam and, of course, this abilities don't affect characters inside the unit). I could see dibukkims go, but I don't think they are repetitive with dervishes and bladedancers (actually, I find bladedancers repetitive with dervishes hahaha), don't know about different rules for them, I will keep thinking.

    1. That would still make them fairly redundant though, since they wouldn't have any use for the Imam if within BSB range (which most main line units are), and +1 To Hit/re-roll To Wound is already part of the Sultan's Holy Commands.
Simplifying the Dibbukim should be easier though, I'd would just nerf his stats/special rules a bit and give him normal frenzy.

  4. I don't think that giving them any of the special rules listed above would make the Imam redundant. Yes, isn't enterily different to what other units can give you, but it also represents some tactical benefits, for instance, I can guard a flank with my warriors unit, giving them an Imam helps them to stay in line, separated from the BSB or general; if I'm planning to run my warriors near my bsb, then I just don't buy the imam upgrade (Imam was a must in every single list I ran in the past, giving them any rule I listed earlier would make them an option to consider, but not a no brainer choice).

There are some other examples in WHFB like Black Guard (reroll to hit when they alreadyn got hatred), Longbeards (panic inmunity and rerolls when you can have the bsb near), Shadow Warriors (hatred against DE when you already reroll to hit thanks to ASF), where they got special rules that seems redundant, but they are still there.

    1. Well, Black Guard do get to re-roll every round, so their Hatred has no effect at all (whereas with the Imam you would have to pay for it even if you might not get any use out of it), Longbeards were written for 6th/7th ed, and Shadow Warriors do not always get re-rolls, especially against Dark Elves.

But that said, I've figured out a way to solve the problem. Imam gives the unit hatred like before, Dibbukim gains becomes weaker, and the army will get a whole new army special rule, which is something I've been wanting to change for quite some time anyway. I think you will like it ;)

I'll be waiting to see that new army-wide special rule!

    3. Well don't expect the moon and the stars in terms of originality or awesomeness now, but it will be an actual army-wide special rule that has an effect during the entire game rather than just one turn like the current Holy War rule at least ;)

    4. No summoning a Genie every turn on a roll of 2+? Too bad... hahahahahahaha

  5. Hi ! Just a question about the janissaries :
They have str4 in the book (p.63) but str3 in the armylist which makes them less interesting ofc... which value should we use ? I suppose it's str3 but...

Anyway, thx for this amazing book !!

    1. D'oh, forgot to fix that! Yes, they are supposed to be S3. I can recommend Janissaries with handguns though, they pack one hell of a punch!
