Warhammer - Grand Cathay 1.71 out now!

A bit bigger than a typical hot fix, this update changes Cathay's army special rule a lot. Nearly all units now have Will of the Dragon, and it works the same as in TOW. This means that the characters that previously had it has gone down in price.

I've also revised the Yin/Yang aligned lores a bit so they follow the official lore from TWW, which was apparently discussed in some Youtube interviews. As a result, the special characters have returned to their previous magic lores.

Patch notes:

  • Will of the Dragons now applies to all units with Yin/Yang: A unit with this special rule may re-roll failed Panic tests caused by friendly units breaking from combat or getting destroyed within 6" of them, or when it is fled through by a friendly unit.
  • Nuku Cho’s Crossbow has Rapid Fire.
  • Staff of Wu Xing costs 25 pts.
  • Clockwork Compass: Once used, all Remains in Play spells within 24" of the bearer that are currently in play are automatically dispelled, and the effects of all other spells within 24" of the bearer immediately come to an end.
  • Seal Of Xing Po: The bearer of this item may choose spells from both the Lore of Yin and Yang in addition to the spells from their other lore. Costs 5 pts.
  • Scrolls of Astromancy cost 35 pts.
  • The Great Celestial Banner gives a 5+ ward save.
  • Lore of Beasts is Yin-aligned, Lore of Heavens is Yang-aligned.
  • Dragon-Blooded Shugengan costs 245 pts.
  • Dragon Descendant costs 365 pts.
  • A Dragon Descendant/Miao Ying/Zhao Ming/Yuan Bao must always be the Army General.
  • Dragon Descendant may not take spears.
  • Magistrates may take light armour.
  • Jade Warriors cost 3.5 pts.
  • Gunpowder bombs: However, if a 1 is rolled when rolling To Hit, the model suffers a single Strength 4 Armour Piercing (1) Hit itself instead.
  • Fixed bug with missing S value for Skylantern/Sky-junk.
  • Onyx Crowmen may take Leaders.
  • Grand Cannon has Thunderous Impact: Place the small round template with the centre where the cannon ball lands before the bounce. All models touched by the template that are not struck by the cannon ball suffer a Strength 3 Hit. Costs 150 pts.
  • Wu Xing War Compass is an Arcane Item.
  • Miao Ying is a Level 4 Wizard who uses spells from the Lore of Life. Costs 530 pts.
  • Zhao Ming is a Level 4 Wizard who uses spells from Lore of Metal. Costs 480 pts.

  • Hua Gongzhu has a Celestial blade. Costs 200 pts.

Warhammer - Grand Cathay 1.7 out now!

This is another really big update overall, hence the longer than expected time it took to finish it (not helped by a few weeks of sleep deprivation on my part, but that's all good now). It features a lot of new magic items, upgrades and unit changes overall - but nothing too controversial I hope.

I've overall included most of the rules from Grand Cathay in TOW, while keeping some things from TWW3 that I felt was better designed. I've trimmed a few options and units down for gameplay reasons, which I'll go over next.

For starters, the Lore of Yin and Yang no longer have signature spells, but are instead supplementary lores that can be taken in addition to the Wizard's chosen magic lore. The spells are now numbered level 1-4 depending on their casting value - in case the wizard would lose wizard levels during the game or other oddball reasons. Each Wind of Magic has been divided into either Yin or Yang alignment based on Chinese cosmology, meaning Yin and Yang Wizards have access to 4 Winds of Magic each. Astromancers and Alchemists are now limited to Metal and Heavens, respectively.

As for the units, I've made quite a few changes, so let's go over the biggest ones. Javelinmen are gone, but Hill Tribesmen can skirmish now to fill the same role. Iron Hail Gunners are a Core unit that can also take regular handguns, instead of it being a Jade Warrior weapon. The Hand Mortar has been removed - there are no models for that I'm aware of anyway, and it made it artillery spam a bit too easy. Heavy chariots have been folded into the War Chariot entry. Lastly, both the Flying Crow and Catapult have been removed - the Fire Rain Rocket fills the same role with dual firing modes now. Overall, Cathay now has more limited options for war machines in the special section, but they still have access to both normal cannons and bolt throwers.

Lastly, I've reworked the spell lores for the three Dragon sibling Special Characters - rather than keeping their magic lores from TWW, Miao Ying uses Heavens, Shadow and Yin; Zhao Ming uses Fire, Metal and Yang; and Yuan Bao uses Heavens, Life, Yin and Yang. Essentially, magic lores better suited to their background and alignment.

Overall, the book should be a bit tighter design-wise now, but still have about the same amount of options as the previous version. Hope you enjoy the update, and many thanks for your continued support!

Next up: Bretonnia, which should be a much quicker update.

Grand Cathay 1.5 (beta) out now!

Well that update sure took a while longer than planned! It ended up being nearly 50 pages long with a ton of stuff being redone more or less from scratch, so it ended up a bigger project than both the Kislev and Estalia updates, but I think the end result is pretty good (albeit a bit buggy at present I'm sure). The new version contains everything from Grand Cathay in Total War: Warhammer III (and yes, they are apparently called Grand Cathay now officially), as well as a slew of historical units and options as before, giving Cathay a very large roster overall and a ton of options!

I need to go through and proofread everything a few times, but figured you guys want to have a crack at the beta rules as quickly as possible, so here is the list of patch notes in their entirety (a video going over the changes will be out in maybe a week or so once most bugs are fixed). Hope you enjoy it!

DOWNLOAD

Next Army: Cathay! Vote for the next one!

After a really tight race, Cathay has come out on top with 17% of the votes ahead of Lizardmen and Kingdoms of Ind. You can expect a lot of new options, units, characters, spells and magic items from Total War: Warhammer III, so it will be a fairly hefty update in that regard!

For the next army poll, I'm limiting the options a bit further to the most popular options from last time. However, I'm also throwing in a dark horse in the form of the Legions of Nagash (which will be mainly based around the Ossiarch Bonereapers range from AoS) since I know quite a lot of people have been looking forward to me working on it.

If you want to be able to vote on the next army, go ahead and join me on Patreon!

Warhammer Cathay 9th ed 1.1 out now!

Been a pretty long time coming, and as such this is probably the biggest update for any of the army books, both in terms of rules and lore. The new version comes with a lot of new units, options and balance changes, as well as a much revised lore section that fixes a lot of inconsistencies and previous clashes with the canon lore for Cathay. Overall, the new version of the book clocks in at 132 pages, compared to 104 pages in the old version, so a lot of new things to read!

This update changes the following:

  • Iron Disciple makes units count as having one more rank than normal for the purpose of combat resolution. In addition, they have the Fight in Extra Ranks (1).
  • New army weapon: Three Eyed Gun (triple barrel rifle). Can be used by Field Engineers and Dragon Lancers.
  • Fire Lance can be used multiple times, is an upgrade to spears for Dragon Lancers.
  • Warlord renamed to General.
  • Duizhu renamed to Captain.
  • Clarified that Wu Jen may use Lore of Light.
  • Strategists may be mounted on warhorses.
  • Wu Xia is a Hero choice, works as an anti-character unit.
  • New Core Unit: Levy Infantry. Can have shields, spears, halberds. May upgrade to light armour.
  • New Core Unit: Levy Bowmen. Have bows, can swap for crossbows, repeater crossbows or javelins. Can have shields and light armour.
  • New Core Unit: Imperial Bowmen – armed with bows, crossbows, handguns or repeating crossbows. Wear light armour, can upgrade to medium armour.
  • New Core Unit: Light Cavalry (native Cathayan light cavalry, armed with short bows, javelins or spears).
  • Imperial Infantry have WS3, Ld7. Can have shields, spears, pikes, halberds, bows, crossbows or repeater crossbows. May upgrade to medium armour. WS3, Ld7.
  • Dragon Lancers can wear heavy armour.
  • Steppe Archers now called Steppe Nomads. Shields cost 1 pt. Have bow instead of short bow, cost 14 pts. May re-roll the dice to see what distance they move for any pursuit or flee roll.
  • Hill Tribesmen may have two hand weapons. May replace shields with short bows.
  • Monkey Warriors do not have quarterstaffs, have dodge (6+), T3, A2. 6 pts.
  • New Special Unit: Siege Crossbow (normal Bolt Thrower).
  • New Special Unit: Flying Crow (Rocket Launcher that fires using the large template, S3, flaming attacks)
  • New Special Unit: Catapult (regular stone thrower)
  • New Special unit: Ogre Mercenaries.
  • Emperor's Guard renamed to Imperial Guard, 9 pts.
  • Swordsaints renamed to Dragonblades (as Swordsaint is the English translation of Kensei, which is Japanese rather than Chinese). Have S3, 11 pts.

  • Bastion Chariot renamed to War Chariot. Have two different version; one with 2 horses, T4, W4. Another version have 4 horse, T5, W4.  Does not have scythes by default.
  • Foo Dogs renamed to Temple Dogs (as they were called in 3rd ed). Are War Beasts, Animated Constructs, Unstable. Have W2, T4, 5+ natural armour, 25 pts.

  • New Special Character: Hua Gongzhu (based on Mulan and Pingyang)

Is no longer a "Dragon in human form", but can cast the transformation of Khadon spell through his magic item to transform into a dragon. Have the Celestial Dragon Armour, making him Immune to Flaming Attacks and gives him a 5+ Ward save. 350 pts.
  • The Monkey King does not Fly or create clones (this was based on the real myth, but does not really fit with Warhammer lore), gains Dodge, and is at -1 To Hit instead. Have WS6, T4, I6.

  • Chu-ye Xian renamed to Zhuge Yi (being a cross of Zhuge Liang and Sima Yi). 1+5 pts.
  • Zhao Fei renamed to Zhao Bei (being a cross of Zhao Yun and Lui Bei). When taking Leadership tests, all friendly units with the Iron Disciple special rule within 12" of him may roll 3D6 and discard the highest result. Zhao Fei's Armour gives him +1 Toughness, and any successful To Wound rolls against him must be re-rolled.
  • Dalan-Tai's Outrider rule means the unit can use Fire and Flee without loosing Swiftstride. He must be accompanied by a unit of Steppe Nomads.
  • Stratagems requires the unit who uses it pass a Leadership test.
  • The Impregnable Tortoise: The unit adds an additional +1 to their armour saves against missile attacks from any direction.
  • Fixed Brush of 1000 years: Every time the bearer succeeds in casting a spell from the Lore of Yin and Yang and rolls any duplicate dice (except 1's), he may choose to make a Leadership test at his own, unmodified Leadership. If this test is successful, every duplicate dice counts as a 6 for the purpose of the Ultimate Power rule. If the test fails, the spell counts as having been Miscast.
  • HD cover.
  • Added headings.
  • Added version number.
I am expecting this new version to have quite a few bugs since it contains so many overall changes, so please start reporting those as much as possible!

Cathay 8th and 9th ed updated out now!

Updated 19/7

A bit later than planned (been busy with work and my new GPU), but here it is, none the less. There might still be some bugs in the 9th ed version due to a sync error with an earlier version, but I've tried to fix all I've found. The Chaos Dwarf update is dependant on some new pictures from Tamurkhan that a friend is getting for me, so it will either be a bit delayed, or I will work on the Cult of Ulric update in the meantime.

  • Lore of Ying and Yan are separate lores with access to boosted versions of their spells. Wizards still get access to both lores as before.
  • Fixed multiple grammar and layout issues in the background section.

I am currently working on a bigger Albion update which will add at least 2 new units, and maybe a special character too. The Bretonnia update is still taking a lot of time to finish due to the near total re-make of the layout in the background section.

  • Genies have Magical Attacks.

In a stroke of non-endorsed commercialism, I'd like to bring the attention of Cathay fans to Watchful I Studios' Kickstarter that is currently in the making. They will create many models suitable for a Cathay army, including Fu Dogs and Terracotta Warriors, which are very hard to come by at the moment from other manufactures.
I'm a pledger myself to their project which is good on the way to be successfully funded, and you can even get a glimpse of my smiling face in the comments (if your interested in that sort of thing). Be sure to "like" their Facebook page too in order to unlock more free miniatures if you decide to pledge.
