About the Warhammer Armies Project

Origins and History

The Warhammer Armies Project is a hobby project of mine that I do in my spare time. It originally started in early 2010 when I worked on a collaborative forum project for an updated Dogs of War army book for 7th edition. This then expanded to other army books with Araby, Kislev, Cathay, Nippon, Norsca, Albion and Amazons released in the first year, and was followed by Halflings, Hobgoblins, Kingdoms of Ind and Pirates of Sartosa. After this I also decided to update Chaos Dwarfs and Bretonnia to 8th edition since Games-Workshop never did. Hence the name "Warhammer Armies Project" – it was a project to create army books for Warhammer, nothing more.

In 2015, Games-Workshop ended the Warhammer World by literally blowing it up in the End Times. At that point I did not play Warhammer Fantasy very actively myself (having previously been playing almost every week), but I still loved the setting and enjoyed compiling all rules, lore and art I could find into one large tome for people to read and play as they wished. As a result, I decided to update the main rules of 8th edition into a 9th edition, fixing the most glaring issues I had with the game and create the game I would have wanted to play myself. A lot of people saddened by the loss of the Warhammer World clearly had the same feeling, and the Warhammer Armies Project grew from just a collection of fan-made army books for 8th edition into a whole new game, actively updated for many years.

In 2023 Games-Workshop requested that I was to remove all official lore and art from the books, so I did. Since then, I've been actively working at updating the books in a rules-only format. While the loss of art and lore is a bit disappointing, this has meant that I've been able to get updates out at a much faster rate, which results in bugs and balance issues being adjusted much quicker than before. Realistically, it would not have been possible to keep updating the older books forever anyway as real life is taking up more and more time, so it might have been for the best anyway.

Rules Design

The Warhammer Armies Project started out making army books complete with lore and art for those factions never really explored in much detail by Games-Workshop. As a bit of an amateur history buff, I decided to base these armies on the real-world nations that they were clearly inspired by, along with what little material Games-Workshop had written for them. This in turn led to armies that were mostly historical in nature, with bits of regional fantasy and mythology sprinkled in. When making these books, I also attempted to include nearly all suitable historical options used by their real-life counterparts to let players build their armies from that. The main idea has always been to have pseudo-historical armies with fantasy elements rather than fantasy armies with some historical elements.

When I started to update the "official" Warhammer armies, I went through all editions of the game in an attempt to include everything that I felt fitting into the army books. This meant that regardless of if you had models from 3rd edition or the End Times (or even Age of Sigmar in some instances), you would be able to field your models in the Warhammer Armies Project. The books have not been created to make the most balanced game system it could be, but rather be the most comprehensive - and then balanced from there.

An important factor is WYSIWYG ("what you see is what you get") - this means that the equipment on the models should correspond with their equipment in-game. This has been an integral part of Games-Workshop's games for many years, and it's still something I like to adhere to. As a result, I expanded the armour selection with medium armour as an in-between between models with just a breastplate and full armour, and included several new weapon types to boot. Whenever I create rules for a unit, I look at the official historical models from Games-Workshop, fitting third party models, lore as well as art and try to ensure the unit can choose equipment that matches that. A few concessions are made to ensure the models still fit with the more modern lore; hence a few units and weapon options that would not fit their modern versions, or that would be mechanically redundant, have been left out.

Another thing is consistency, and having the rules and units follow a systematic pattern. This means that if a rule or unit works a certain way, you can expect the same principles to apply to similar versions of it between all books in a logical fashion. This in turn makes it easier to understand why a certain mechanic behaves the way it does, rather than having a ton of exceptions everywhere. For the same reason, I try to streamline the rules where possible, and dislike including special rules just for the sake for having special rules. Instead, special rules are included in order to give a unit a specific role when needed, and/or to keep consistency with other similar units.

When it comes to the main rules, I was never particularly enamored with a lot of the 8th edition rules, particularly due to long charge ranges, steadfast, overpowered magic, weak shooting and monsters galore. As such, I attempted to remedy these things with the Warhammer Armies Project 9th edition. As a result, infantry charges are slowed down, steadfast has become more limited, magic has been toned down with less powerful spells, shooting has been made more viable and monsters are rarer. Overall, this has resulted in a game that places more focus on careful maneuvering and flanking rather than just building the biggest unit possible and attempt to steamroll the opposition, or throwing all available dice into a single game-ending spell.

The Future

I plan on supporting the Warhammer Armies Project in whatever capacity I can, so people who want to can enjoy the game for many more years to come. You can look forward to many smaller updates in the future to fix bugs, address balance issues and probably some more units and items. Time willing, I'm also planning on adding expansions to give even more options to players in the years to come.

Thanks for reading.

Notice from GW and the future of the Warhammer Armies Project

Since the demise of Warhammer Fantasy Battle (WFB) in 2015, the purpose of the Warhammer Armies Project has been to keep the game going and be freely accessible as a repository for all the old Warhammer lore in as close to its original form as possible, so anyone interested could enjoy it even after Games-Workshop (GW) had stopped selling the books. However, as GW still retains the intellectual property rights to the material, this would always be at their mercy for however long they would tolerate it.

As I posted on our Discord server two days ago, I've recently been contacted by Games-Workshop regarding using their text and artwork in the majority of the Warhammer Armies Project publications, and they have requested me to remove all instances which infringes in their intellectual property. I don't begrudge them for doing so, even if I would obviously have preferred to be allowed to keep the books up as is. I also want to point out that GW has been very polite about the whole thing, and in no way threatening. I also appreciate that I have been able to keep the project going for this many years and keep the interest for WFB alive during that time.

What this means is that starting today; all the download links to the books are no longer available on this website anymore and I will not be able to keep working on the books in their current format. This also applies to the non-GW army books as most of them contain some amount of GW lore and/or art; and the few that do not are not really worth to keep up by themselves as part of a now very incomplete collection.

However, the current web version of the game is still active as it does not really contain any lore apart from some snippets and the rules themselves. I am also considering reworking all books into a "rules-only" system with PDF's similar to the Ravening Hordes style list from early 6th edition, where you would have access to all the rules and could still play the game. Unit and character names would also remain unchanged.

However, with the onset of the Old World likely getting fairly close to release, any such rework will have to wait until then. The reason is pretty simple; an officially supported WFB by GW is much more likely to see play, and I imagine a large part of the community will move over to it. As such, I don't want to waste my time reworking and rewriting everything only for it to be superseded a few months later. If the Old World rules turn out to be good - great, then we can all play that, and I will consider to make expanded rules for it (but without the lore most likely). If the Old World turns out not so great - I will likely keep supporting 9th edition.

Note that I do not want to make any promises I cannot keep - I've been working on the Warhammer Armies Project for over 13 years now, and I'm not a student with a ton of free time anymore. I'm married, have a full time job and a lot of miniatures to paint. As such, I cannot say for certain what the future will be for the Warhammer Armies Project, only that I will do my best to support it as well as I can make the time for it.

So for the foreseeable future, this website will be limited to just being a hobby blog of my personal armies along with the link to the current web version of the 9th Edition rules and a few hobby-related downloads. But regardless of what happens to the Warhammer Armies Project later on, it's been a fun (if sometimes frustrating) ride, and those of you who still have the army books can of course use them to keep playing the game and share it with your friends.

I also want to wholeheartedly thank everyone that has been along for the journey and offered feedback, reported bugs and proofread the books to help me fix the many mistakes I made; I would not have been able to do it all without you. And special thanks to the mod team on our Discord server for making Lores of Magic cards, the web version of the books, files for Battlescribe and generally keeping the server peaceful and organized.

Can't think of a good ending for this post, so I'll just say: keep enjoying Warhammer in whatever form makes you happy, and paint your minis!

Removing downloads for 8th Edition rules

As followers of this project has probably noticed, I do not really do any updates for the 8th Edition rules any more, and I do not really have plans to either as I'm more than occupied with the 9th ed rules which I find more fun to work with and make for a better game overall.

As a result, I will be removing the remaining 8th ed material from the blog since it's outdated, the remaining bugs won't get fixed, and it takes up unnecessary hosting space. I will be leaving it up for the rest of next week for those who want to download the 8th ed material; I know some people will be hosting them elsewhere which is perfectly fine if you want to do so.

Other than that, the 9th ed rules will be kept updated as planned, with a large update wave coming out soon followed by Nippon.

Limiting Blogger comments

Just a quick note that I am limiting comments on the blog to members of the blog only. The reason for this is two-fold: one is because a lot comments nowadays are just spambots, and the other reason is because many comments are on old blog posts that either do not apply anymore or that I do not actively follow. Overall, it's highly recommended that you join our Discord server (linked both in the menu and to the right of the page) if you have any questions or want to be part of the Warhammer Armies Project community.

Standardised Base Sizes for all armies

Updated: 2023-04-04

While the main rulebook makes it clear which base sizes are allowed for each troop type, a lot of people have still been asking which base size to use for each unit. As such, I have with the help of the community put together this document that lists all the "official" base size for every single character and unit in Warhammer 9th Edition. These base sizes have been written to take into account all official models from 6th ed to 8th ed, with some minor adjustments for playability.

Base sizes are either square (like 20x20) or round/oval (like 25). In case the square bases is a rectangle (such as 25x50), use the first number for the model's front, and the second number for the model's flanks. In case you use oval bases, the number indicates the length of the base at its longest point. All base sizes are in mm.

Note that these base sizes are the considered the correct bases for the game. Larger or smaller base sizes should preferably be agreed upon with your opponent, but using larger base sizes than those listed should for the most part be considered fair game. In case you find any of these base sizes to be incorrect, feel free to feedback it at our Discord group, and it will be looked over for possible revision.

Issue with security update for Google Drive

I have gotten quite a few sudden requests to edit my army books pdf's through Google Drive this last week for some unknown reason, and finally figured out why: apparently Google has rolled out an update that made it so that people that had no opened these books earlier could not access them without getting a permission first. I have removed the security update from all the affected files now, so they should be available for everyone again. If you still have any issues with this, let me know in the comments or email me so I can investigate it.

Warhammer: Magic Items 9th Ed Beta out now!

This book contains all Magic Items created by GW and featured in the 6th and 7th Ed army books, as well as Warhammer Chronicles and Expansions.

As some of these items currently have the same or very similar effects as several main rulebook items, I'm open to suggestions how to make them different. For the beta version, I've mainly just focused on compiling everything, though you will notice that some items has changed slightly for balance and usability. So while everything here should be playable, it should by no means be considered finished.

Note that magic items that already belong to Special Characters or are in the main rulebook are not featured here. In case you think a Magic Item is missing, I recommend you check it's not elsewhere in the army book or the main rulebook first. For Warriors of Chaos, many missing items will instead appear in the Special Characters book.

Once the 1.0 version is ready for release, I will decide whether to keep the magic items in a separate book, or implement all Magic Items in the separate army books like in 6th and 7th ed.

Lores of Magic Cards for 9th Ed

Here are links to Lores of Magic cards to the various lores available in the game. Many thanks to Edward Craske for putting these together!

Note that these cards are outdated and were made for the 2.2 version of the game. There are plans to create new cards for 2.3 eventually.

Interview with me on Elector Counts/Squarehammer

So a little while ago, I did an interview with two of the guys from the Elector Counts Podcast and Squarehammer, talking about the Warhammer Armies project, its origins, my thoughts on the 9th Age, favourite armies, Warhammer Total War, as well as answering questions from the community. And here's that interview for those who want a listen and enjoy my awesome/silly Swedish accent:

Warning: Contains swearing, nudity and Tasmanians!

Tip: Play a drinking game while listening and take a shot every time I say "like", "so to speak", "essentially" or "actually". I take no responsibility for any alcohol poisoning that is sure to follow though!

Donate button fixed

Just a quick heads up that the previous "Support" button has been changed to a clearer "Donate" button, with a link that now is in English (did not realise that it had apparently had been in Swedish for everyone it seems!). This also include a "monthly recurring" option since a few of you had asked if I had a Patreon account or similar, which was not the case back then.

So, if any of you felt like donating in the past and could not get past the Swedish donation page (in which case I don't blame you) it should now be easier to do so. Any donations to help me and the project keep going are much appreciated.

Spring Cleaning - models for sale!

Update: Just got an email from Ebay saying their are lifting my selling limit of only 100 items, so I can now list the rest of the stuff I thought I had to wait with until next month. This includes a lot of Blood Rage minis (perfect for Norse), including limited edition Kickstarter ones, some various characters for RPG games, and some more Warhammer miniatures that did not get sold last month.

*****

Now this is a bit of a different thing altogether, but seeing as the majority of the models on sale were bought with the WAP armies in mind, I'm sure this can be of interest to some of you. Last week I cleaned out a ton of old Warhammer that I no longer have any use - or indeed space - for any more, and this week I am doing the same, but mainly for historical miniatures and other fantasy games.

As such, if you play one of my unofficial army books and you are in need of some fitting models, I now have a pretty big selection up for sale on Ebay that I am auctioning off (unfortunately they won't let me list more than 100 things a month, so the rest will have to wait for next month). So, if you currently are or plan to collect either Araby, Albion, Bretonnia, Cathay, Nippon, Kislev, Dogs of War, Estalia, Halflings, Norse, Pirates of Sartosa, Empire, Vampire Counts, Slaanesh Daemons, Dark Elves or High Elves, you can find suitable things for them in the link below:

Choosing between 8th and 9th ed books

Update: Decided to close to poll as I have gotten plenty enough votes now. 60% preferred 9th ed compared to 40% for 8th ed, so 9th ed seems to be a quite a bit more popular. As such, all books from now on will be updated in the 9th ed format, but 8th ed books will still get rules updates in a Ravening Hordes format so people who prefer 8th Ed can still keep playing it. I won't remove the 8th ed books for the time being as they are still updated, but in the next rotation they will be replaced with Ravening Hordes versions. Thanks for everyone who voted!

Up until this point, I have been trying to make two versions of each book, but I've realised that this is causing quite a lot of issues with making future updates that does not simply involve changing the rules, as I have to fix things like layout, artwork, text additions and spelling errors twice. On top of this, the amount of books to keep updated (around 60 with both versions) means I'm likely to run out of space on my Google Drive account soon.

As such, I've decided to only make a single version of each army book. I will still support both 8th and 9th ed with rules updates (one of them will get them in a Ravening Hordes format), but only one of the editions will get a full army book. Seeing as the books themselves are pretty similar, this should not be a huge issue since you can use one for reading and one for gameplay, but it will make it a lot easier for me to keep them updated.

However, I am as of yet undecided which edition should get the full version and which should get the "lite"-version. On my part it does not really matter since the background will be the same regardless, so in that regard I'd like to get some feedback from you guys which version you prefer. Just choose one of the options to the left of the webpage. After 20 days, I will close the poll and pick the edition with the most votes.

Just some info about the Update Order

Due to Warhammer: Total War 2 being out later this year which will contain both High Elves, Dark Elves and Lizardmen (and as such, probably some new background that can be added to their books), I will postpone the planned updates for these books (as well as Wood Elves, since I want all Elf books to be released shortly after another) and focus more on the main armies of the Old World for the time being. This means that after the release of Orcs & Goblins (most of the work is done, still has some background stuff to edit), I will focus on the Empire, and then either Dwarfs or Vampire Counts. Chaos will still have to wait as I'm waiting to see what GW has in store for Nurgle and Slaanesh, so I know how much material I have to make an expansion out of.

Page under construction!

As you can see, the blog menu looks a bit different than usual. This is because I'm trying to implement the much needed dropdown menu with multiple submenus in order to make everything fit without being too cluttered. So far, I've managed to get the code to funktion, but there's still quite a lot of work that's needed before it's finished, so this is just a heads up that some links to certain downloads will be unavailable for the time being. I hope to have everything up and running again by tomorrow.

Edit: all the updated links are now up again. I've still to find a way to center both the menu and the submenu, but I have a friend who can hopefully look into it soon. Until then, you will find that the menu should now be a lot more easily navigable to find the book you want.

Edit 2: Menu is now in line with the rest of the website, so it looks like the old menu. Enjoy the new and improved browsing!

Ravening Hordes

This is a summary page of all current Ravening Hordes, until such a time where I can implement a proper sub-level dropdown menu. Unfortunately the current menu bar simply do not have the space to fit all the current headers, hence the Ravening Hordes lists will be posted here until further notice.

For newer players, "Ravening Hordes" is the name for army lists that currently do not have a finished army books. These "get-you-by" lists allow you to play the armies below with updated rules for both 8th and 9th Edition until I have the time to finish each army's complete book with background and art.

Expansion plans

Update: Thanks for the feedback everyone! I don't have time to answer all individually, but I've updated this list with the suggestions I either forgot or that I think I can do justice. Some of the other suggestions will be likely be included in the various army books, and as such they are not featured here.

As this is something that often pops up, I'd like to get some opinions on what expansions you would like to see in the future. Expansions will be smaller releases that will contain some background on the subject, as well as some new units that can either be included in their main army or as a stand-alone force. Currently, I have plans for the following releases, sometime after I finish the main books:

  • Gnoblar Hordes - updated version of the White Dwarf list with more units.
  • Fimir - updated version of my old Fimir book, but with only the essential units and some basic fluff.
  • Champions of Chaos - a compilation of all Chaos special characters (too many to include in the WoC book)
  • Border Princes - smaller army list that allows you to make a combination of Bretonnia/Empire/Dogs of War with some new unique units.
  • Priests of the Old World - rules for priests of all the gods in the Empire.
  • Khorne - rules for including models from Battletome: Bloodbound in Age of Sigmar.
  • Tzeentch - rules for including models from Battletome: Disciples of Tzeentch in Age of Sigmar.
  • Steam Tanks - rules and background for alternative Steam Tank builds.
  • Dark Shadows -  a re-release of the background (and maybe rules) from the 6th ed campaign.
  • The New World -  a re-release of the background (and maybe rules) from the 6th ed campaign.
  • Storm of Chaos -  a re-release of the background and variant army lists from the 6th ed campaign.
  • The Nemesis Crown -  a re-release of the background (and maybe rules) from the 7th ed campaign.
  • Skirmish Rules - updated rules and scenarios for Skirmish from 6th ed.
  • Warbands rules - updated rules from 6th ed.
  • Path to Glory - updated rules from 6th ed.
  • Scenario Pack - compilation of all Scenarios published in White Dwarfs and campaign books.
  • Campaign packs - a re-release of the background (and maybe rules) from the 5th ed campaign books Perilous Quest, Grudge of Drong etc.
  • Magic Items - a compilation of magic items from previous editions that did not make it into the 8th ed cut.
  • Army of the Cairns - updated rules of the 6th ed list.
  • Zombie Pirates - updated rules of the 6th ed list.
  • Civil War - rerelease from 8th ed.
  • Sigmar's Blood - rerelease from 8th ed.
  • Hinterlands of Khuresh - smaller list of the race of Blood Nagas (maybe).
  • Mordheim Characters -  Warhammer rules for the Dramatis Personae.
  • Warhammer Siege - updated rules from 5th/6th ed.
  • Monstrous Arcanum - compilation of the monsters that does not fit into the various army books.
  • Special Characters - updated rules of the special characters that won't make the 8th ed cut.
  • Stormcast - Warhammer rules for the models from Age of Sigmar (maybe), for people who want to be able to use the models. I'm not going to try and shoehorn them into the Warhammer World, merely make rules to make them compatible with 8th and 9th ed.
  • Ancient Warhammer: Army lists for Nehekhara, Tylos, Remas, Sigmar's Tribes etc.

Anything I missed that you want to see included?

Regarding future updates

Update 14/1: Finally finished compiling all my various Warhammer sources now (probably around 2000 pages in total, not including the army books!). This means I will be able to start working on the Kingdoms of Ind list again now, which will be released later this month.

Update 9/12: Finished with transcribing all White Dwarfs, thanks to everyone involved! I'm now currently in the process of doing the same with all the Citadel Journals and then the Campaign books. These should go a lot quicker though, so I'm currently keeping the planned schedule!

Just a heads-up that there will be a while without any new updates coming out. The reason for this is because I'm currently working on transcribing the contents of all relevant White Dwarf articles into Word format, which will take some time. After that I will also need to go through various campaign books and collector's guides and gather more background and art so I'm not missing any sources. I would expect all of this to take around a month or so, but with Christmas coming pretty soon, it could be a bit longer. I think I should be able to come out with some more updates around January.

In case any of you readers are interested in helping me transcribing the articles to make it go faster, feel free to send me an email regarding what army's articles you'd feel like working on and I can send you the files you need. Work will consist of editing out spelling errors due to OCR mistakes and divide the text into proper paragraphs (using the original White Dwarf article for help). The more help I get, the sooner I can start getting new updates out.

Here's a list of current transcription progress of the various armies, including those that you readers have stepped in to help with so far:
  • Beastmen - finished.
  • Bretonnia - finished.
  • Chaos Dwarfs - finished.
  • Daemons of Chaos - finished.
  • Dark Elves - finished.
  • Dwarfs - finished.
  • Empire - finished.
  • High Elves - finished.
  • Lizardmen - finished.
  • Orcs & Goblins - finished.
  • Ogre Kingdoms - finished.
  • Skaven - finished.
  • Tomb Kings - finished.
  • Vampire Counts - finished.
  • Warriors of Chaos - finished.
  • Wood Elves - finished.
