Multiple updates out now + news for future updates

Some minor updates for several books, fixing the following:

Albion:

  • Druid Neophytes 10 pts each, only get +1 to cast after the second 5 models in the unit. Can only cast Earth Blood and Shield of Thorns.

Amazons:

  • Eagle Warrior javelins cost reduced to 1 pt.
  • Totem Guardians have halberds and shields instead of great weapons.
  • Gorols don't have any equipment by default, can purchase great weapons and light armour, 35 pts basic.
  • Wizards can now use the Lore of Beasts.
  • Augments from the Lore of the Serpent are no longer "remains in play".
  • Jaguar Hunting Packs only require 1 Beastmaster.
  • Some new art.

Araby:

  • Golden Magus 370 pts.

Estalia:

  • Fixed multiple bugs.
  • Fire Bulls may now be charged.
  • Knights of the Blazing Sun have S3 (25 pts basic), can be upgraded to Inner Circle.
  • Knights of the Righteous Spear added.

Halflings:

  • Short bows instead of bows for cavalry archers, 1 pt cheaper.
  • Some layout changes and additional background for certain units.
  • Ram Riders may take magic banners.
  • Swan Riders may have standard bearers.
  • Lords of the Harvest may not have magic standards.
  • Hobilars only have to test for the Omph! rule if they roll a 1 when charging, pursuing or fleeing.

Hobgoblins:

  • Fixed multiple bugs.

Norse:

  • Some new art.

Next up will be new the Bretonnia update, followed by the Alpha version of 8,5 ed. After that, I plan to give both Skaven and Beastmen their much needed updates to 8th ed. These are planned to be pretty quick affairs, mostly giving the books a facelift and making them consistent with the other 8th ed books. Art and background will be a mix of 6th and 7th ed books, as well as some from WFRP. Some new units will feature from Monstrous Arcanum, and maybe Storm of Magic as well.

  1. Thanks, fire bulls now are not that dangerous anymore but for 12 points okay.

There is another error in the profile summary of the emminent magnus. Thanks

  2. The old and good golden magus :D

Hey Mathias, I done(me and more friends) a Beastmen rework(pending for test) for 8 edition and other one of skaven(tested at least 15 times vs your armies and workshop armies).

Is in spanish, but you can take ideas, points value and sinergies. Take a look :)

  4. @Estalia: Nice update, the new knights might be really strong if an Inquisitor is in it.

I still think the Tercio needs a clarification when using a mixed unit of Roderleros / Aventuros: if the command group is placed in front and is attacked, does it use the parry-safe of the Rodeleros? I would recommend to change the rule to this: the front rank is always made up of Rodeleros and command group is in the second row. Characters always (!) have to go the first line of the unit ( to avoid "hiding").

And for the mountain bandits: What effort does hill strider actually have? Hills dont affect the movement atm, do they?

    1. Inquisitors can only be on foot though, so you are going to have some really slow knights in that case ;)

Since you cannot attack command group models (aside from the champion) this does not really matter, but yes, they would follow the same rules as the Rodeleros. Added clarification.

Hill Strider would have an effect in rocky terrain (rock strider would sound rather strange though).

    2. Perhaps Crag Strider is a better term.

    3. In my beastmen rework the dragon ogres are hill strider too, like the mountain bandits or the Jotun. Low relevance in game terms but it fits for background :D

  5. Have you thought about giving the Amazons access to some of the bigger beasties of the Lustrian jungle? Other than the coatl, they dont have anything. And they have zero monster mounts for their heroes/lords. I might be biased, but I want my Matriarch riding into battle on a Carnosaur or something.

    1. I don't want to go too far into dino-territory since that would make them pretty much the same as the Lizardmen, so only smaller lizards like terradons and cold ones are planned at the moment.

  6. The order for human troops seems to be Ld 3 for forces that do not want to be there (like slaves), 5 for untrained civilians who nonetheless want to fight, 6 for self-serving soldiers, 7 for professional soldiers and elite self-serving, 8 for elite soldiers and lower leadership and 9 for upper leadership. Shouldn't you make that consistent across all your army books? The Dogs of War and Pirates of Sartosa are appropriately self-serving so it would make sense that they would have low leadership (6 for normal troops, 7 for elites) while Bretonnia Men at Arms and Peasant rabble are not full professionals but still want to be there so they should be Ld 6 and 5 respectively. In the rest of your army books, its consistent.

Also, Hobgoblin Warriors feel a little under-costed for 3.5 points. They cost only 0.5 points more than their forest and knight goblin cousins but are better equipped (with light armor and shield instead of one of those) and competent in melee. 4 points is more reasonable.

    1. Self-serving or semi-professional. Whichever one is more appropriate for the army.

    2. Ld is also based on their training as soldiers. DoW are professional soldiers like Empire troops, so that's what they have standard Ld7 (even free company have Ld7). Ld6 is more for poorly trained militia, Ld5 is for armed civilians. The Pirates are still "professional" raiders in a sense, that's why they have Ld7.

M@A have low Ld because of the political state in Bretonnia ("help, help, I'm being oppressed!"), but they do have Ld6 if led by a Yeoman (who is a "free" peasant), so most of the time, they are still going to be at Ld6. Peasant Levy are just about Slaves in willingness. Sure, they fight to protect their land, but they would prefer to stay at home to tend their crops rather than be forced to fight if given the choice.

  8. I actually own quite a few halflings and was hoping you would make the book a little bit more cost effective to field infantry. Most of the characters, magic, and non shooting based infantry are overcosted. Would you be willing to take another look at the points and perhaps make a few adjustments?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Most of the Halfling units did get a price reduction not too long ago, sure you have the latest version of the book? They also get to roll on the before battle meal (should probably rename it "the dinner table" for laughs) which gives them additional special rules, as well as being at -1 to be hit. I'm not sure I could warrant making them cheaper without them being too good for their cost.

  9. Just discovered this website and I love it. Highly unlikely to play AoS but I love the Warhammer world so this is just perfect. Thank you!

  10. Hey, Mathias, what about an update for Chaos Dwarves? I'm talking about their racial rules. When west dwarves has +1 to Strenght of Parry saves, the east dwarves has -1 to his flee movement. A bit unfair, right?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Might have to go back to that, but to be fair, I rather dislike the new Dwarfen rules. I mean come on, bonuses for both charging AND being charged?

      Delete
    2. But they are cool rules to counter the gunline concept. Surely there are better ways, but these are not bad. And the +1 to parry is to counter the great weapon spam, and it works.

Dwarves would be a nice and moderately balanced army only if the thanes still had L9 (because with L10 thanes the Dwarf kings doesnt have any sense, you dont need pay 150 points more in a commander when the hero do the same) and you couldn't spam gyros for free(all tournament armies are the same, 6-8 gyros and then starts the rest of the list... kinda sad).

      Delete
    3. The Parry I like, it fits with their background. But S7 Dwarfs on the charge, when they are an army who is notoriously known for being defensive, just does not fit, even if it help with the gunline concept (I'd rather see them focus on a shieldwall concept myself).

I might try to do some changes to the Dwarf book as well to fix these things in the future.

    4. I've been playing low point Chaos Dwarf games, and it is kinda true that the infantry underperforms. At the same time Chaos Dwarfs have access to special rules regular Dwarfs don't get (Magic, for example, unless you count the wizarding hat).

I think a slight buff to infantry is in order, but I'd also change the special miscast rule on the Sorcerors. In the lore it's counted as a curse, slowly turning to stone is highly dangerous but in most games it's more of a boon than a liability.

  11. Hi Mathias!

I have finished right now a game with a friend using my Skaven rework and your Arabia army book. We have a doubt with the Flying Carpet's Carpet Bombing special rule: can you asign the WS3 1D6 Poisoned Attacks to specific targets on an unit you fly over? For example, if you fly above a unit of Clan Rats, can you asign the attacks to a Grey Seer inside and slain him? So weird xD

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. They are distributed like shooting attacks, so that will not be possible! I've added that paragraph in.

      Delete
    2. Well, when you treat them as melee attacks (to use the poison) you can target ppl with them as you can do in close combat, but it was unfair. Thats nice, add your paragraph plz, with that my Death Master Snikch would not have died in such a ridiculous way :P Thanks

      Delete
    3. Yeah, it's supposed to work like DE's Bladestorm spell, in that you get melee attacks, but the attacks themselves are randomised.

  12. I was wondering if you would consider adding Rhinox Cavalry to the Dogs of War book as a rare choice? The last paragraph in their fluff seems to suggest they would be perfect.

"These Grimhorn Rhinox Riders typically carry all their worldly
possessions upon their mount - a broken Rhinox also making for an
excellent beast of burden. This also serves as a display of their success
as mercenaries, showing off the vast wealth they have earned, as
although Rhinox Riders can usually secure the victory of any battle
they are engaged in, these brutes and their gigantic steeds do not
come cheap. Infact, many paymasters of the victorious side will often
be found weeping at the sight of the extortionate share of the spoils
of war they have to pay out to them."

    1. I believe there was talk about that a long time ago, but we skipped them because we felt we had plenty enough Ogre units already. It's true they fit in the fluff and would give DoW an MC unit, but I'm still partly thinking that 2 Ogre units is enough. Might update the rules and have them as a separate download at least.

  13. Could you please create a hinterlands of khuresh book based on Siam and a border princes one based on ancient greece;both of them standalone books of course

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Are Border Princes based on Ancient Greece in the Lore?

Also I'm pretty sure you can emulate a Border Prince Army with the Dogs of War book. I always thought Dark Elves were based on the Greeks with their Hydras and Sea supremacy.

      Delete
    2. Khuresh is based on Naga (which I suppose could be said to be partly based on Siam), but I won't have any time to work on them I'm afraid.
Border Princes have no Ancient Greece faction as far as I know in the official background. For Greeks, it's better to use the DoW book, Sellswords allows you make both Hoplites and Peltasts and whatever other units you fancy really.

  14. Bretonnia army book seems very solid save for the Trebuchets. A 35 pt increase for a decrease in strength?

    1. Also, the points increase for the prophetess seems rather strange. Thoughts on both matters?

  15. I don't know about your opinion of Warhammer 40,000 but I think the allies matrix from it should be lifted into your 8.5 edition book. The three levels of alliances from the normal game is fine but instead of every army book being tied to Order/Neutral/Destruction they should have their own alliance set. For example, Vampire Counts would be Desperate with the Chaos armies. Nippon and Cathay would be suspicious of each other (due to their history of conflict and Nippon's isolation preventing bridges from being mended). Lizardmen would be suspicious with most human armies since most humans would think that they're a kind of beastmen if they saw a lizardman. Cathay would be desperate with the Hobgoblins due to constantly pushing them away from the great bastion. It would also be plausible to believe that an Ogre tyrant would take over a Orc and Goblin warband due to the orcs instinctively following whoever is biggest and bullying goblins into submission so Ogre Kingdoms and Orcs & Goblins would be Trusted allies.

    1. Could be worth thinking of, but that would be a future project, albeit a small one.

      Delete
    2. If you do decide to do that, armies should be able to take a few units from a different army as allies. An allied army would probably consist of:
      0-1 Lords
      0-1 Heroes
      0-1 Special Characters
      1+ Core units
0-1 Special unit per core unit
0-1 Rare unit per two core units
This is very similar to the sorcerous pacts from Storm of Magic though now requiring more core units to get rare units and with the chance of the alliance breaking down during the battle removed.

  16. Hi, Can I suggest that if you do a rework of dwarfs could you include the shard dragon? I think it would be a great addition (for the rune collars) also can I print your books? only for read I preffer having a book that I can touch iand also A friend recently discovered warhammer and I want to show her the complete warhammer world

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Shard Dragons are more known to be the enemies of the Dwarfs than their servants, so I don't think it fits too well as part of their regular army.

As for printing the books, no problem. I distribute as freeware, so you can pretty much do whatever you want with them :)

      Delete
    2. Well I thought they were a good add to the dwarfs (For what I read in Monstrous arcanum book) anyway thanks for listening

  17. Hello
Was wondering if we might get some information about which new units you're going to put in the Skaven and Beastmen books? Or is it a case of wait and see :)?
Also, would it be possible to put out a compatibility chart for your armies and the various monsters from storm of magic/monstrous arcanum/scrolls of binding compendium? Like the one Forgeworld put out for the main armies a while back. It might be a bit of work I think, but I'm sure, like everything you do here, it would be much appreciated!

    1. I've done the basic work on the Skaven Bestiary so far, so it's hard to say exactly what the changes will entail. Once I've finished most of the units, I will make a post about what to expect :)

I'll see about the Monsters as well, been thinking of doing something like that for a while.
