New Norse update out now!

This update changes the following:
  • Berserker-gang now works automatically whenever a successful charge is made.
  • Shieldwall removed as army wide rule, only Huscarls have it to denote them as elite. This also sets the army apart from Dwarfs and gives them a more offensive role.
  • War Chant of Ulric now only gives +1 to wound.
  • Ulwerenar 16 pts, only 1W each, 4+ regen.
  • Shield Maidens 7 pts, Ld 7.
  • Raven banner 60 pts, now makes the units immune to Fear and Panic instead of Psychology., thus allowing for Counter-Charge as a charge reaction.
  • Ice Drake 225 pts.
  • Jarls can now carry the Battle Standard as well as Skalds.
  • Valkyries bumped to 3A each like Cairn Wraiths.
  • Huscarls 12 pts, keeps Shieldwall, can form it and receive AS bonus against missiles by losing movement. This makes them more of a stand-out tactical unit.
  • Berserkers 14 pts, no equipment. Can purchase weapons instead. Blood-crazed now gives them Devastating Charge while Frenzied instead.

  1. God you don't half knock these out quickly, only just printed out the last version. Do you have a contact email or something. I have been reading through most of them and have spotted lots of little errors, mainly just typos but don't want to write them all up here - will also look too much of a criticism for other viewers.

    1. Well you know, better to have new versions out sooner rather than later when there are things that could be implemented better.

There's a contact box just to the right of the side, there you can get in touch with me directly if you have a wall of text you want to write ;)

  2. Great work. This has inspired me to create an entire new Norse army for WFB.

    1. Glad to hear! I'll have the gallery of my own Norse army up eventually, might give you some ideas for suitable models :)

    2. You should be checking out Shieldwolf Miniatures, they have announced a huge release plan by the end of this year as they are currently the only manufacturers out there creating an entire barbarian army at 28mm heroic scale. I can't wait to see what they have in mind.

    3. Considered their models myself, but I decided to go with Westwind myself. While I would like my Norse to look suitably barbaric, I also want them to look more like Viking as opposed to just generic Conan barbarians. The Nordvolk look like a pretty good mix of the two. But I'll let you decide for yourself once I have the gallery section up :)

    4. I would really enjoy to see the gallery of your miniatures, and as I'm planning to start aa Norse army myself, I would be grateful to know where you each got your miniatures from :)

  3. Bondsmen are still listed as having Shieldwall on their description page - I think they're not meant to have it now?

When a unit uses Counter-Charge, do they count as charging?

    1. Right you are, must have missed that one.

Yes, counter charge should be considered a charge for all purposes. Can add that to the description.

    2. Looked it up more clearly; as Counter-charge uses the rules for random movement, they will count as charging due it those rules, no need to add anything.

  4. Hey Mathais, I was looking at the Kislev, and I noticed that Tzarina Katarin doesn't have her Ice Staff/Wand. Did you forget to include this? And if so will she be able to add dice to her cast/discast?

    1. Hi, the Tzarina never had an ice wand as a magic item in either the Kislev booklet or the Empire book, so I didn't forget to include anything :)

    2. Oh okay, thank you. Which book will be updated next Mathias? I hope Fimir or Hobgoblins.

    3. Next up will really be Mordheim characters, only need to finish the layout and points costs there, for the special characters at least.

Don't really have any large plans for the Hobgoblins, was there anything in particular you were hoping for?

  5. I was hoping for the Hobgoblins to have at least two more special characters, and maybe a special mage character.

Look forward to Mordheim characters and all your books Mathias, would you trust any other fans to help you with your 8th edition quest? This may also help you speed things up.

    1. I was planning on adding more special characters to them at some point, have a friend who was interested in writing their fluff and basic rules.

I can always use help with background (since this takes the longest, and is usually where I tend to rush things), so if you have anything you would like to see published, feel free to make a write up and email it to me. Can't promise I'll use it, but if I do, you can be sure to get a credit in the book!

    2. I'll see what I can do. I may even get one of my co-author's interested in this. He would know more about the lore and history of the Warhammer world. I myself have a more pressing matter. I am currently finishing my second novel for publication.

My novel is called Vengeance of Valdorian, and I am putting up book 2, Leoj's Wrath. You can find this on smashwords.com, and I am currently in the process of getting it published on hardback.

If I do any fluff, would you care if it were Lumbria and Nauticans (or fish people)?

    3. That would be great!

Seeing as I have ideas and semi-plans for a fishmen army, they would be a good bet ;)
In general, I would need background for them as a whole, I already have some of the units and their fluff plotted down. I can give you more information once I get there though, no need to start anything right now.

  6. Hey Mathias, would you prefer me to send you everything in a word document or in just a regular email? I have worked on a lot so far and I will email you on Sunday. I am not going to post my email here but it starts with the letter "z" and my title will be:

    Mathias' Fishmen Army. Sounds good?

    1. Sure, no problem! Word doc or plain text; either works fine since it will need to be formatted into a book format anyway. Looking forward to reading it!

  7. We're having a 'Vanguard Clash' tournament at my local club, and I'm running Norse. http://www.arvardardboyz.com/SMF/index.php?topic=5877.0

My Berserkers got into combat for the first time out of three games, last night, and they were lethal - the opponent just couldn't land any wounds due to Feel No Pain.

    1. Sounds like they performed as expected then! Or did you find them too strong? I've been tinkering with removing that rule in order to get their points down a bit, but at the same time, that could result in them just being killed off instantly due to the lack of armour.

      Delete
    2. I don't have enough experience with WFB to say whether they are too strong. I wrote a simulation program to replay the main combat they were in in that game, and it says the most likely result was the Berserkers should win by 1 or 2 points but my opponent got unlucky and they actually won the first round by 7 points.

We have the final games of our tournament tonight so I'll email you some more notes and details when we're done.
