Showcase Gallery: Dogs of War

This is my Dogs of War army as it currently stands with all Regiments of Renown. This is one of my favourite armies along with Bretonnia and the pride and joy of my collection. I started collecting Dogs of War around 2009, buying most of the Regiments of Renown that were still available from Games-Workshop's website at the time, and then managed to track down the rest of the army through eBay and local forum purchases.

This army contains all the Special Characters (including Dramatis Personae from Mordheim, though all are not featured here yet) and Regiments of Renown except for Beorg's Bearmen, which models I don't really like (though I still have Beorg himself at least). The models shown here so far is only around 25% of my total Dogs of War army, the rest will be painted later on between other army projects.

Expansion updates out now!

Warhammer: Dogs of War (Regiments of Renown) Banners available for download!

Many thanks to Edward Craske for helping me out with these! Together we have compiled and updated scans of all official Regiments of Renown Banners that were only available in the unit boxes from the 90's, meaning they are nearly impossible to find now. So now those of you missing these banners for your Regiments of Renown will be able to complete them.

Download

Work is also being done to create banners to use for regular Dogs of War units, which will be made available later on.

In addition to this, Grimforge Miniatures also makes some excellent banners that they have available on their website. They have kindly allowed me to host 3 of those banners here for you to download as a preview should you wish . If you like these banners and would like them as ready stickers to apply to your units, I'd recommend buying the whole set.

Warhammer: Dogs of War 9th Ed 1.14 out now!

This update changes the following:
  • Dwarfs hate Hobgoblins. When taking Break tests, they count as having lost the combat with 1 point less than they actually have.
  • Lucrezzia Belladonna has the The Best Money Can Buy special rule.
  • Net Fighters: When it is their turn to attack, roll a D6 for each model armed with nets. On a 2+, one enemy model in base contact is ensnared and suffers -1 Attack (both rider and mount) for the remainder of the close combat phase.
  • The Crest of Mydas: Mydas and all models in the same unit gains the Magical Attacks special rule. In addition, enemy models must re-roll successful Ward Saves caused by close combat attacks from the unit.
  • Pegasus costs 30 pts for lords, 20 pts for heroes.
  • Griffon costs 150 pts.
  • Updated Giant rules.
  • New magic standard; Eagle Banner, replaces Standard of Miragliano. Enemies can never get the Outnumber, Flank or Rear combat resolution bonus against the unit carrying this banner.

Regiments of Renown 1.13:
  • Tichi-Huichi's raiders have Natural Armour (6+), so they can use their fast cavalry rule.
  • Updated Dwarf rules.
  • Updated Giant rules.

Warhammer Dogs of War 1.13 and Regiments of Renown 1.12 out now!

Two very small updates here, just taking care of some minor issues:

Dogs of War:
  • Ogre Captains may take Ogre Pistols.
  • Duellists costs 4 pts by default.
  • Animosity affects units with 5 or more models, not Unit Strength 5.

Regiments of Renown:
  • Hengus costs 100 pts, meaning the whole regiment of Giants of Albion cost 500 total.
  • Fixed bug with the Giants of Albion missing from the For Hire table.

Warhammer Expansion: Regiments of Renown 9th Ed 1.1 out now!

With this update I have mostly just tried to streamline a few of the RoR's a bit, as well as making most of them a bit cheaper to be more worth taking. The For Hire table now states what type of Ally each unit is for each army, and includes all armies, not just the official ones. I also added headings to the PDF for easier navigation and reorganised the RoR's in an order more similar to a regular bestiary.

Updated to 1.11:
  • Fixed bug with Alcatani Pikemen having A2 and BS3. Have medium armour, cost 6 pts each, 145 pts by default.
  • Fixed but with weapon profiles saying "missile" instead of "strength".
  • Galloper Guns Have a range of 48" and may march move, but suffer -1 to their Movement
  • value instead. Can flee with the swiftstride special rule.
  • Bronzino allows re-rolling the first artillery dice rather than the bounce. In addition, as long as Bronzino is within 3" of a Galloper Gun, he is allowed to take a "Look Out Sir!" roll just as if he was within 3" of a unit of five or more models of the same troop type as himself. Bronzino has heavy armour.
  • Added Zealotry to Desert Dogs: Models with this special rule deduct -D3 from their
  • Leadership modifier when taking Break tests (this will be updated in the Araby book later on as well). Fixed bug with their horses having M8 instead of M9.
  • Fixed bug with pts costs for Marksmen and Besiegers.
  • Fixed bug with Lost Legion having Unit Size 20+. Clarified upgrade to Crossbowmen.
  • The Bearmen of Urslo are Bound by Blood allies with WoC.
  • Giants of Albion have Immunity (Psychology).
  • Clarified race types for multiple regiments.
  • Clarified that the Witch Hunters' items work against Vampiric models.
  • Gotrek's Axe may re-roll failed rolls To Wound against enemies with T5 or more.

This update changes the following:

  • All RoR Captains follow the "Follow Me!" rules for unit Champions.
  • Alcatani Fellowship cost 135 pts by default (20 models).
  • The Lost Legion cost 125 pts by default. Have pikes by default for 6 pts, can upgrade any number of models to crossbowmen. Pirazzo does not have a crossbow.
  • Leopard Company costs 220 pts by default (20 models).
  • Republican Guard costs 260 pts by default (20 models).
  • Marksmen of Miragliano cost 155 pts by default. 10 pts per Marksman.
  • Al Muktar's Desert Dogs no longer has Ambushers or Daemons or Horseback special rules. Ibn has WS0, BS0, A0. Have Arabian Steeds (M9). Cost 170 pts by default (5 models).
  • Asarnil cost 520 pts, no longer re-rolls armour saves.
  • Bearmen costs 305 pts by default. Cost 9 pts each.
  • Birdmen cost 14 pts each, no longer ignore penalties for moving and shooting, do not have the Ambushers rule. Cost 85 pts by default.
  • Braganza's Besiegers cost 175 pts by default.
  • Galloper Guns do not have Vanguard. Cost 135 pts by default. Extra Galloper Guns cost 80 pts.
  • Cursed Company costs 175 pts by default. Richter Kreuger has I4.
  • Manann's Blades cost 160 pts by default.
  • Vespero's Vendetta cost 110 pts by default. May re-roll failed Parry saves. Cost 7 pts each.
  • Voland's Venators cost 190 pts by default. Do not have the Drunken Cavalry special rule.
  • Long Drong's Slayer Pirates have WS4. No no longer has the Festooned with Pistols special rule (both to the models themselves not really having more than 2 pistols, as well as issues with bonuses/penalties that would affect their close combat attack Strength when they were technically shooting while in close combat). Dwarf Rum causes enemies in base contact to suffer -1 WS. Cost 195 pts by default.
  • Fighting Cocks cost 140 pts by default (10 models). Have T3 and the Forest Strider special rule. Lumpin does not have light armour.
  • Golgfag's Ogres cost 285 pts by default (5 models). Ogres cost 31 pts per model. Golgfag has medium armour.
  • Armoured Orcs cost 170 pts by default. Fixed bugged Weapon Skill of Maggot.
  • Wolfboyz cost 145 pts by default.
  • Tichi-Huichi no longer has the On a Mission from the Gods rule, costs 150 pts by default.
  • Manflayers have Armour Piercing (1) on their crossbows. Have Elven Grace. Cost 155 by default, 19 pts per Manflayer.
  • Goblin-hewer have two crew. Cost 175 pts.
  • Giants of Albion have S6, cost 200 pts. Hengus cost 110 pts.
  • The Witch Hunters are no longer Skirmishers. Clarified that Wilhelm channels dice like a lvl 1 wizard.
  • Gotrek has the Dragon Slayer and Daemon Slayer rules from the Dwarf book. His axe may re-roll failed rolls To Wound against models with T5 or more. Clarified that the Wyrmslayer Blade works against Drakes as well as Dragons. Cost 360 pts.

New Dogs of War and Regiments of Renown update out now!

This update changes the following for DoW:

  • Light crossbows removed, replaced by normal crossbows (which fits better historically and with the models available).
  • Best money can buy no longer give AP, capped at 4+/3+ for infantry (so can never be better than full plate).
  • Added racial distrust to all non-humans except halflings.
  • Removed ASF from assassins, 60 pts.
  • Maneaters and Rhinox riders have the same profile as RH: Ogre Kingdoms.
  • Crossbowmen with handguns counts as special choices.
  • Gave Halflings short and nimble special rule instead of forest strider.
  • Several bugs fixed.

RoR changes:

  • Manann's Blades added.
  • Birdmen have normal crossbows.
  • Amazons no longer have light armour.
  • Asarnil have Martial Prowess instead of ASF.
  • Fighting Cocks have short bows, 8 pts/model.
  • Manflayers no have ASF or AP for their crossbows.
  • Wolfboyz no longer ignore penalties for stand and shoot.

On top of this, I am also planning on updating the RoR's that was included in various Citadel Journals over the years, along with other fan-made RoR's. The reason I'm not including them in this book is because they did not have any official models made for them, and are as such not as recognizable to the players. Hence they will get their own small document similar to how I have made the currently fan-made RoR's available. This will be later down the pipeline though, as I want to focus on the main books first.

Dropping support for Issuu and Scribd

Due to the annoyance of having to manually upload updates to these two sites, I've decided to drop the support for those versions. This won't affect the majority of you since downloading from Google Drive is easier anyway, and minor updates are often only uploaded here to begin with. Plus, Scribd have an annoying tendency to delete some documents by mistake due to them being similar to previously removed official GW publications, so you can't even find the whole collection there anyway. All books will still remain on these sites since they still show up very high in the search results, thus making it easier for new players to find them, but they will be marked as outdated.

Along this, I'm also dropping the support of two existing documents, Fimir and Classic Regiments of Renown, which are not available on this site at the moment anyway. Fimir will of course return as an Allied Contingent down the line in an updated 8th ed format, but I don't think I will be working more of the Classic RoR's. This is due to many of them simply not fitting with the current background of Warhammer, and several already have official updates as Special Characters or current RoR's. More than that, most of them were never mercenaries to begin with, so the term "Regiment of Renown" isn't all that fitting as it would allude to them being Dogs of War, which they in most cases are not. The rules will still be available online for those who might be interested in either using their rules or read their background, but they won't see any new support beyond that.

Dogs of War 4.2 and new RoR update out now!

Finally out of beta, the Dogs of War book has now been updated into an "official" 4.2 version. There's not a whole lot of changes from the beta for those of you who downloaded it then, but if you didn't, here's a quick run-down of the major changes:

  • New units: Broken Lances, Pit Fighters, Hobgoblin Wolf Riders, Ribaults, Ballistae, Assassins, Griffons.
  • Rebalanced points costs for several units, e.g cheaper pikemen and crossbowmen.
  • New weapons and rebalanced old weapons: war hammers and blunderbusses, slightly weaker pikes, improved light crossbows.
  • Improved formatting and layout throughout the entire books.
  • Lots of new background for many units.
  • Plenty of new art.

Links are the same as before.

Regiments of Renown beta update out now!

Only posted this on DoWO so far, so figured those who might not visit that site might have missed it.

Changes:
  • New high-res cover, changed to the same as the Dogs of War book for consistency, since people had commented on the old cover being somewhat "misleading" in that it didn't have anything to do with the RoR's in the book.
  • Re-done layout to eliminate empty space on the pages.
  • New stat boxes to line up the characteristics properly (please make sure they all are correct, some are intentionally changed).
  • Revised points cost for most units.
  • Birdmen no longer Ambush.
  • Manflayers +1 WS, ASF, Murderous Prowess.
  • Wolfboyz +1 WS like the 5th ed rules to make them stand out from common hobgoblins.
  • Rebalanced Goblin-hewer; it now fires D6 shots per rank, but each shot must roll to Hit individually rather than just firing once.
  • Giant of Albion have Ld10 like normal Giants, Hengus gains +1 to dispel.
  • The Fighting Cocks have BS5, like their 5th ed rules to stand out more from normal halflings.

This is still subject to change (hence it's a beta) but you can still take a look at it current changes until the finalized version is out.

Download

At the moment, I'm not working  much on any of the books and don't expect to be doing so during December either. However, you can look forward to see some new material come January, with updates to the Special Characters book as well as the finished 4.2 version of the DoW book.

Dogs of War "For Hire" table for unofficial armies

Seeing as this has been a pretty common request for a while, I felt I probably should indulge it. So here you go, a table that lists which Regiments of Renown each of the unofficial army books (as well as Chaos Dwarfs) can take:

For Hire

And as a bonus, here are 3 Regiments of Renown I wrote a long, long time ago way back in a time known as 2009 (before starting on the Araby book even!). The fluff is a little lacking, but the rules are rather fun to play around with. Let's face it, who hasn't dreamed of having super-heavy dwarf cavalry? ;)

Raven's Rangers, Palindor's Praetorians, Curin's Cataphracts

A rather overdue update that takes care of some bugs and updates a few things in these books, namely the following:

  • Text for the paychest is no longer cut off on the last row.
  • Some new artwork for the units.

Regiments of Renown:

  • Asarnil updated for HE 8th ed.

 Classic Regiments of Renown:

  •  Elfwing cavalry updated for HE 8th ed.

New Classic RoR update out now!

Rather than having to queue up with all 3 updates at once, I'm posting this one right now since it's separate from the "tournament" books anyway. It doesn't change any rules apart from the sword Scabscrath and some clarifications on named models, but gives it a bit of a refurbished look with a new background and some new artwork.

The full colour updates for DoW and the normal RoR's is pretty much done as well, just waiting for the green light from the other developers.

Full colour Dogs of War update coming soon!

Looks like Cathay will be ever so slightly delayed as we have talked about finally making the DoW book full colour. Like the latest Bretonnia update, this will be a short endeavour, probably only taking 2-3 days.
The full colour update will also include Regiments of Renown and Classic Regiments of Renown, which will get a new parchment background. This update will also include the errata changes discussed at Dogs of War online. Expect updates for all 3 books before the end of the week.

Classic Regiments of Renown update out now

Very small update, only fixes a layout bug where Ulthor's Dwarfs spill into the For Hire sections. Should be all good now.

Regiments of Renown update out now!

Well this was long overdue, but we have finally finished the update at http://dogsofwaronline.com. While still being black and white like the Dogs of War book, this includes updated rules and fixes for the Regiments of Renown released by GW between 1998-2005. Compared to the older release, units are now marked with troop types, and have regained some of their special rules from 5th ed with an overall refurnished layout. Though no real major changes unlike the Dogs of War book, this new version should clear some things up and make it a lot easier to include Regiments of Renown in both your Dogs of War army and as units for hire in other armies.

Warhammer: Nippon - proper 8th edition update out now!

Well, that went quicker than expected, finished with the large update, and it's not even halfway through October yet! This is the first (and possible only) book completely in colour. It's 10 pages shorter than the last version since I've done away with the insanely long timeline. I've updated all the background, magic items, units, army list - well, pretty much everything. I have not incorporated every bit of fluff there was on the subject, because that would be mean the book would be over 1000 pages long, which is just not feasible when trying to use it for games. As such, only what I consider essential information (about 50 pages) is in there.

The list as a whole looks very different, maybe to the point where some might be disappointed. The entire special section is new, and there are large changes to both core and rare as well.
The book as a whole has been given a lot more emphasis on its source material, Legend of the Five Rings, and as such, each Greater Clan now have their own unique unit, and you can buy Clan Mon to your characters which gives them a special ability and influences how you build your army to a small degree.

A summary of what has been added, removed and replaced:

Death before Dishonour - new army special rule
Hatamoto -> hero character, BSB
Ashigaru -> 3 different unit choices
Peasant Doshin - removed
The Damned -> replaces Sumo Warriors
Doji's Fan - elite horse archers
Mirumoto Mountaineers - samurai scouts
Lion's Pride -> replaces Hatamoto
Yoritomo Marines - ambushing samurai
Legion of Flame - samurai with ward save, improves in large numbers
Scorpion Claws -> replaces Kabuki Dolls
Battle Maidens -> replaces Red Devils
Ninja -> moved to rare, have gotten a stat boost, can now Infiltrate
Shinobi -> replaces Shadow Eye
Shrine of the Kami -> completely new Blessing effects
Flaming Arrow - Cannon/Bolt Thrower
Mangonel - stone thrower
Oni -> moved to rare
Kitsune -> can be taken in units, no longer casts bound spells
Thunder Dragon  - removed
Ronin - removed
Hida Kisada - new SC
Doji Hoturi - new SC
Togashi Mitsu - new SC
Akodo Setai -> new SC, replaces the Red Ronin
Yoritomo Kumiko - new SC
Isawa Ochiai -> new SC, replaces Agasha Chieh
Shosuro Nodage - new SC
Otaku Komoko -> new SC, replaces Utaku Yu-Pan

Well, that should be it, I think. Some sacrifices had to be made to ensure that all units still fill their own role to avoid overlap (had 11 special units for a while there). Hopefully you'll like it, though I'm sure it's not to everyone's tastes.

I probably won't be out with any new rules before November (unless Regiments of Renown are finished by then), but sometime next month you should see the release of either Pirates of Sartosa or Cathay.

Edit: uploaded a new version which fixes a small bug (as always), rewrites part of the Warrior Monk background, and gives Samurai Cavalry their own page.

Updates for Classic RoR and Knightly Orders out now!

Sorry, no Kislev update just yet (a weekend dedicated to partying and ensuing hangover ain't great for creative energy! Or any energy at all really..), but I've worked on two smaller updates tonight at least. The first one fixes a small issue with the Goblin Chariots and gives a smaller vanguard rule to the Mother Crushers, and the second one adds options to take magical standards as upgrades for Knights Panther and Knights of the White Wolf. Unfortunately I couldn't find anything on High Helms in Shadows over Bögenhafen, so they have been left out for now.

Anyway, I think I should be able to finish the Kislev update sometime later this week, hopefully by Friday or Saturday.
