Third large update wave out now!

The third and final update wave before the Main Rulebook update, taking care of a few minor things that I overlooked in the first pass, or which were reported afterwards, along with a few other additions.

The Main Rulebook update will be a very large one - I've done most of the work ahead of time, but it will probably take a few weeks until the beta is out since it will require quite a bit of back and forth discussion on the Discord server, and there are a lot of minor bugs I need to fix as well.

Many thanks to all my Patreons for supporting my work so far, and I hope you will enjoy the next updates as well!

Large update wave out now!

Going over the upcoming updates for the non-official books, I felt that since they are all going to be pretty quick ones with little discussion required, I might as well publish them all at the same time so I can get started on the Main Rulebook sooner.

The plan is to publish another quick update wave again for the official books next week, so stay tuned for that.

Albion 1.61:

Main change is the removal of Son of Ogmios - it was added last update, but frankly does not work well considering full Giants are still WS3 - meaning Half Giants as characters suddenly being WS5 is very inconsistent. Regular Half Giants have gotten a bump to T5 making them consistent with regular Giants, and can now take a command group.

  • Removed Son of Ogmios.
  • Shieldbearers give Inspiring Presence (6), costs 25 pts.
  • War Hounds have M8.
  • Shields and light armour for chariots cost 4 pts.
  • Half Giants have T5, I3, costs 37 pts. Added command group options. May take javelins.
  • Giants and Bonegrinder Giants may take Woad Paint for 30/50 pts.
  • Stone Thrower has 3 crew.

Araby 1.72:

  • Cleric has Magical Attacks.
  • Bowmen can take bucklers, not shields.
  • Janissaries have bucklers by default, cost 7 pts. Can replace them with shields or other weapons. Cannot take shields in combination with other weapons.
  • War Elephant causes D3+1 Impact Hits. Spike Chain increases this to D6+1. Costs 120 pts. Can take light armour and/or barding, not armour plates.
  • Khalil al-Zahir has Inspiring Presence (6), costs 305 pts.

Estalia 1.22:

  • Tactical Supremacy: Any unit with this rule has the Cold-blooded special rule when taking tests to March, Reform, Redirect Charges, Restrain from Pursuit and when using Support Fire.
  • Warrior Priests have Magical Attacks.
  • Fixed bug with Hidalgos missing Tactical Supremacy.
  • War Dogs are M8.
  • Knights of the Blazing Sun: The model must be armed with heavy lance, shield and barding. Whenever a unit where the majority of models have this special rule makes a successful charge, the enemy unit being charged suffer -1 Weapon Skill and Ballistic Skill for the duration of the turn.
  • Isabella Giovanna Luccelli has Magical Attacks and Magic Resistance (2).

Halflings 1.21:

Two larger changes - Treemen are now Monstrous Creatures and solitary units, like in the Wood Elf book. This is also more in line with how they worked historically, and solves the inconsistency issue between the two books. I've also decided to remove the Halftank - it being a miniature steam tank with completely different rules made little sense, and I did not feel it was right to just copy the Empire's most unique unit wholesale. It's also more akin to a special character than a unit since there's only one Halftank, and it does not really play into the rest of the Halfling theme at all. Hence it's being relegated to a historical foot note rather than a common battlefield unit.

  • Hobilars may take javelins.
  • Shearers have scythes.
  • Treemen are Monstrous Creatures, Unit Size 1.
  • Removed the Halftank.

Hobgoblins 1.22:

  • Fixed bug with Orlok statline.
  • Merged Cutthroats and Archers into a single unit.
  • Dire Wolves renamed to Snarlfangs.
  • Hobhounds are M8, have Frenzy.
  • Ravagers cost 11 pts.
  • Kheshig poison only applies to close combat attacks.
  • Mangudai poison costs 2 pts.
  • Fixed bug with Nergui's statline.

Kingdoms of Ind 1.21:

  • Thronebearers give Inspiring Presence (6), costs 30/20 pts.
  • Royal Chariots may take up to three additional Crew.
  • War Elephants may take light armour and barding.
  • Giant Bows and Jingals are slow to fire.

Kislev 1.22:

  • Supreme Patriarchs have Magic Resistance (2).
  • Kossars are Unit Size 15+.
  • Fixed bug with Winged Lancer stats.
  • Strength of the Great Bear: Ilja may forfeit his normal attacks in favour of doing a special attack. This attack has the Multiple Wounds (D6) and Ignores Armour Saves special rules.

Nippon 1.31:

Katanas now follow the rules for "Oriential longswords" in both Cathay and Dogs of War, so they are consistent with each other. It's now the Samurai's defensive weapon with Parry, and Armour Piercing on top (even if the latter does not really make much sense). Way of the Warrior has seen a bit of a nerf so it's more in line with the Knight's Vow in Bretonnia, and also makes the Warrior Monks stand out more.

  • Katanas give Armour Piercing (1), Parry (6+), Requires Two Hands.
  • Way of the Warrior no longer re-rolls failed Psychology tests.
  • Clan Mons count towards the Magic Item limit.
  • Uesigo Clan Mon: Yamabushi may re-roll failed Leadership tests when using Prayers of the Kami. Costs 15 points.
  • Warriors Monks and Yamabushi have Magical Attacks.

Norsca 1.21:
  • King renamed to Jarl.
  • Jarl renamed to Hersir.
  • Bondsmen, Marauders, Reavers, Shieldmaidens are unit size 15+.
  • Jarls, Hersirs, Marauders and Horsemen may take flails.
  • War Wolves are Unit Size 10+, cost 7 pts.
  • War Wolf Chariots may replace javelins with throwing axes
  • Great weapons for Trolls cost 6 pts.
  • Fixed bug with Werebeast's stats.
  • Frost Giant’s great weapon costs 10 pts.
  • War Mammoth may take light armour.
  • Fixed bug with Styrmir Rimefrost missing.
  • Jora and Bjorn may not be the Army General.

Pirates of Sartosa 1.31:

  • Multiple minor bug fixes.

Zombie Pirates 1.51:

  • Updated Red Thirst and Necromancy to be on par with Vampire Counts.
  • Fixed bug with Vampires being listed as Undead.
  • Syreens are Loners.
  • Bloated Corpse is Expendable.
  • Scurvy Dogs have M8, WS/I2.
  • Necrofex Colossus does not have Magical Attacks.
  • Magical Void: Luthor Harkon channels dispel dice on a 4+ rather than a 5+.

Warhammer - Estalia 1.21 out now!

Decided to make a few more changes to the existing units based on feedback. The Caballeros have back in core in the form of Hidalgos, essentially low ranking noblemen and aspiring knights. They have lower WS and Ld, and cannot take heavy armour or heavy lances.

I've also removed the Black Watchmen from the rare section, as people did not find them worth taking - and they were a bit overtuned compared to other human armies anyway. Instead, their heavy armour has been given as an option to the Royal Guard, which are now Stubborn - thus acting more like a typical guard unit.

Lastly, the Royal Guard have lost access to their handguns, but instead you have a new unit of Musketeer - BS4 troops with extra long range. This way you are not forced into paying for extra WS, Ld and medium armour for a unit that is only meant to engage from a distance, which makes them much less of an investment.

Patch Notes:

  • Tactical Supremacy allows units to make a swift reform, not a full reform.
  • Renamed Spear of Myrmidia to Spear of Righteousness and Shield of Myrmidia to Shield of Honor (their canon names from Up in Arms).
  • Mace of Sacrifice: At the end of each close combat phase of which the wielder takes part, roll a D6; on a 6 the wielder suffers a wound which cannot be saved by any means.
  • Shield of Honor applies in all turns, cost 45 pts.
  • Coronet of the Conqueror gives Inspiring Presence (6) instead of +1 Ld.
  • Sword of Talabaro costs 20 pts.
  • Scintillating Shield costs 30 pts.
  • Amulet of Dawn costs 50 pts.
  • Staff of Arcane Draining: for each natural 6 rolled when channelling Dispel Dice with the bearer, you may remove one Power Dice from the enemy’s Power Pool.
  • Blessed Grenade of Aquilia works like a missile weapon. Place the small round template with its centre anywhere within range. If the attacks hits, resolve the damage as normal. If the attack misses, the template scatters D6".
  • Banner of Santiago costs 20 pts.
  • Maestro may take throwing weapons.
  • New Core Unit: Hidalgos (medium cavalry)
  • Royal Guard have polearms by default, cannot take handguns. Can take heavy armour and great weapon. Have Stubborn instead of Immunity (Panic).
  • Sisters of Fury cannot take polearms.
  • Fixed bug with incorrect WS and Ld for Knights. Knights have heavy armour by default, cannot take pistols. Cost 15 pts.
  • Conquistadors cost 19 pts.
  • New Special Unit: Musketeers (missile infantry)
  • Grenadiers can take blunderbusses.
  • Mountain Bandits have Ld6, cost 8 pts.
  • Removed Black Watchmen.
  • Knights of the Inner Circle: If Juan Federico is in your army, you may upgrade one unit of Knights of the Righteous Spear to be Inner Circle for +2 points per model. These models gain +1 Strength and +1 Initiative.

Warhammer - Estalia 1.2 out now!

Apologies for the long wait; family life and a nasty cold that I'm still recovering from got in the way, hence the delay. This is not a huge update, but it does change a few things around. The most immediate is that of the Inquisitors, which have been removed - they were just too similar to the Priests of Myrmidia in function and lore, and their Powers did not really have any logical in-game explanation either, being just a 40k import. However, their powers have for the most part been turned into magic items unique to the Priests, and the Priests do not come with equipment by default, allowing you to tailor them into your classical Inquisitor-type if you so wish (which is also more in line with the lore). There's also a new High Priest of Myrmidia option mirroring that of the Empire. Overall, the book has less emphasis on the Inquisition than before, and is more in line with how the Swords of the South book describes Estalia.

As for other larger changes, I've included a new core unit of Diestros - this is essentially the same as the Duellist unit from Dogs of War, and was part of an earlier version of the army list - it just did not feel quite right for Estalia to be missing a similar unit considering how dueling focused they are in the lore. The old Diestro has been upgraded to a "Maestro" as a result.

This has meant the removal of the Marines as a unit - they were too similar to Diestros in terms of equipment, and always felt a bit out of place in the army anyway. Their Ambushers special rule is now an upgrade for the Almogavars instead, meaning you are not really missing out of anything of value.

Other than that, you have your usual collection of reworked and new magic items as well as a bunch of minor balance changes to the existing units. Hope you enjoy the update, and a huge thanks to my Patreons for your support as always!

Patch notes:

  • Countermarch Fire: Models with this rule in the front rank of a unit ignore the Ponderous special rule if they have another friendly model with the same special rule in base contact behind them.
  • Units of Crossbowmen or Arquebusiers within 3" of a unit of Tercios may lend them support fire if the Tercio is charged by passing a Leadership test (which may be re-rolled with a Leader).
  • Tactical Supremacy no longer affects Rally tests, but works when using Support Fire. If the unit is charged during the Movement phase and chooses Hold as a charge reaction, it can attempt to change formation immediately before your opponent has moved any of their charging units, as long as it is not already engaged in close combat. To do so, the unit must take pass Leadership test – if successful, the unit can immediately make a reform as described in the Warhammer Rulebook.
  • Removed Inquisitorial Powers. Most of these have been remade into magic items.
  • Added dozens of new magic items.
  • Removed Inquisitors.
  • Magus renamed to Mago/Grand Mago. Grand Magus may ride a Pegasus. Can use any Winds of Magic. Removed Restricted Practise.
  • New Lord: High Priest of Myrmidia
  • Priests of Myrmidia costs 90 pts. Does not have equipment by default. Have Magic Resistance (1), no Divine Power. Skill of Combat gives +1 To Hit. May take light lance and heavy armour. May not take Altar of Myrmidia.
  • Diestro renamed to Maestro.
  • Griffons have the same upgrades as the Empire and High Elves.
  • Aurochs have Strength 4.
  • Holy Fervour: All friendly Human units benefit from the rider's Blessing of Myrmidia special rule whilst within 6" of a War Altar of Myrmidia.
  • Pikemen are Unit Size 15+. May take bucklers.
  • Rodeleros are Unit Size 15+.
  • Additional hand weapons and shields for Rodeleros cost 0.5 pts.
  • Caballeros renamed to Knights, are a Special Unit. May take barding. Knights of the Blazing Sun and Righteous Spear are upgrades. They cannot be upgraded to Inner Circle by default.
  • Spears and light armour for Almogavars cost 0.5 pts. May be upgraded to Ambushers.
  • New Core Unit: Diestros
  • Removed Marines.
  • War Dogs are Unit Size 10+. Cost 6 pts.

  • Grenades causes D6 Hits regardless of target.
  • Sisters of Fury are Unit Size 15+.
  • Mountain Bandits cost 9 pts.
  • Mercenary Ogres have Natural Armour (6+). Cost 30 pts. Can take great weapons or polearms. Medium armour costs 6 pts.
  • Falconets have a range of 12-48". Have 2 Crew by default. Costs 60 pts. May take extra crew.
  • Removed Ricardo Lupe. His magic items have been moved to the regular pool of items.
  • Alonso Diaz de Mirajo renamed to Diego Montoya. Does not have armour or Beloved Captain. Has WS6, I6. Costs 130 pts.
  • Avenger: At the start of the game, choose one enemy character. Against this model, Diego Montoya has the Hatred special rule. In addition, the target must re-roll all successful To Wound rolls against him.
  • Don Lomente costs 100 pts. Removed the Insane rule.
  • Tilting at Windmills: Don Lomente may never be the Army General. If he has Line of Sight to a Monster or building, he must always move directly towards the nearest one whenever possible (charging if possible, even if the building is empty or garrisoned by a friendly unit). If he moves into contact with an empty or friendly building, he may move normally in his next turn.
  • Maria de Salvo has T4, costs 150 pts.

    Estalia 1.1 (beta) out now!

Estalia is finished, at least in a beta format. I've also gone through the book myself a bit better than Kislev to fix some bugs ahead of release (you can bet I've still missed plenty). I'm planning on keeping it in a beta stage a bit longer than Kislev to avoid needing to do multiple hotfixes, so expect the 1.1 full version to maybe take 2 weeks while I gather feedback and fix the remaining bugs.

Unfortunately I don't have a list of patch notes for this one due to the time it's been since I started working on it several years ago; several of my previous patch notes for it were outdated by the time I started working on Estalia in the new format anyway. I'm planning on doing a video overview of the army once I get back from my trip abroad, but I figured you guys would probably want access to the rules sooner rather than later which I why I'm releasing it now. Hope you guys enjoy it!

Next army: Estalia! Vote for the army you want after that!

As I mentioned on our Discord and Patreon; Estalia is the next army to be updated, as voted on by the Patreon supporters. Work has already begun and I'm expecting it to be released in the first half of August (due to me traveling abroad and thus having less time to work on it).

In the meantime, Patreon supporters can now vote on the next army after that, which includes options for other armies that have not received an update for several years. Head on over to Patreon if you want to be part of the voting process!

New Estalia update and 9th Ed version out now!

    This update changes the following:

    • Removed griffon upgrades.
    • Cheaper Aventuros.

    • Knights of the Blazing Sun have S3 (25 pts basic), can be upgraded to Inner Circle.
    • Knights of the Righteous Spear added.

    Halflings:

    • Short bows instead of bows for cavalry archers, 1 pt cheaper.
    • Some layout changes and additional background for certain units.
    • Ram Riders may take magic banners.
    • Swan Riders may have standard bearers.
    • Lords of the Harvest may not have magic standards.
    • Hobilars only have to test for the Omph! rule if they roll a 1 when charging, pursuing or fleeing.

    Hobgoblins:

    • Fixed multiple bugs.

    Norse:

    • Some new art.

Next up will be new the Bretonnia update, followed by the Alpha version of 8,5 ed. After that, I plan to give both Skaven and Beastmen their much needed updates to 8th ed. These are planned to be pretty quick affairs, mostly giving the books a facelift and making them consistent with the other 8th ed books. Art and background will be a mix of 6th and 7th ed books, as well as some from WFRP. Some new units will feature from Monstrous Arcanum, and maybe Storm of Magic as well.

New Albion and Estalia updates out now!

Another set of small updates here, changing the following:

    Albion:

    • Nerfed Cormac Chath and Conor McFeud. The former could cause way too much damage alone, and the latter were too unkillable. Don't think I have uploaded these fixes before, though they were patched quite a while ago based on feedback.
    • Several minor text formatting fixes.
    • Fixed formatting error caused by this update (20/10).

    Estalia:

    • Conquistadors now have light armour by default, can upgrade to heavy armour.
    • Genitors do not lose Fast Cavalry with LA.
    • Genitors may take spears.
    • Several minor text formatting fixes and some minor edits to the fluff.

In more interesting news, I will be making some changes regarding the release order. I've decided to scrap the release of the Mordheim characters as a stand-alone supplement, these will instead be included in the special characters book. I simply felt that it would be a bit too barren of a release to put out as a whole new document, so they should make a better fit with the already existing Special Characters. What this in effect means is that I will be pushing forward the date of the planned Bretonnia update, which I know some of you have really been looking forward too. Going to try to have it finished later this month.

    New Estalia update out now!

After many delays, here's the promised update for Estalia. It's not particularly big in terms things added, but it does make a large number of balance changes:

    • Tercio Formation (finally) fixed. It now works like a cross of Pirazzo's Lost Legion and Empire detachments.
    • Pikemen may be upgraded to Aventuros for +1WS and Initiative. Aventuros may form Tercio Formations with Rodeleros. This way, you have to pay a premium since it's a more effective fighting unit.
    • Most Infantry units dropped in price. Pikemen, Crossbowmen, Handgunners, Almogavars, Marines, Mountain Bandits, Sisters of Fury, Black Watchmen and Conquistadors are now 1-2 pts cheaper.
    • Improved text formatting in the background section.

    New Estalia update out now!

Small update here, changes the following:
    • Double-spread pages now align correctly.
    • Multiple spelling errors fixed.
    • Some new art.
    • A few minor bugs fixed.
Edit: Turns out me fixing some of the bugs caused some new ones to crop up! These have been fixed, though this only applies to the Google Drive version.

    New Estalia update out now!

Nothing major, just the usual Day 1 patch (except that it is much later). Only a few spelling errors and minor bugs, now taken care of, as well as a few minor changes to their timeline and background section. File size is also down to 9,5 MB from than 41, so it's also much easier to have on smartphones and the like if you use it.

Warhammer Estalia: Proper 8th ed Update out now!

Well that was done a lot faster than expected, and I didn't even need to call for "backup" on this one! Looking back at the old version, I really have to say I did a rather poor job with it, both balance and editing-wise. There was a ton of inconsistent parts, like the Inquisition being started by nothing less than 3 different people and all at different points in history, in addition to poorly translated Spanish-to-English text (my bad) and plenty of grammar issues throughout, as well as poorly put together backgrounds for the units themselves.
Fortunately, this new version fixes all of that, and everything should now be much, much more cohesive and easier to read, not to mention looking a lot nicer too!

I would also like to give proper credit to Steven Lewis and Steve Darlington, whose names I completely missed to include the first time around. Steven wrote a significant part of Estalia's original history section, and Steve wrote parts of their geography and society.

Balance-wise the book is likely weaker now, with points increases almost across the board, and many special rules have been nerfed and tweaked, though it will still require play-testing to know if anything else needs changing of course!

A summary of the new things in Warhammer: Estalia:

    • Almost completely revised history section, including the timeline.
    • New army-wide special rules: Tercio Formation, Estalian Steel, and revised Tactical Supremacy.
    • New units: Almogavars, War Dogs, Mountain Guns. Missionaries, Serfs, Inquisitorial Henchmen are no more.
    • Revised units: Diestro are now characters, Handgunners are a core choice, and Royal Guard replaces Arqubusiers, among several other changes.
    • New Special Characters: Isabella Giovanna Luccelli, Grand Inquistor de Hojeda and Maria de Salvo. King Miraz is no more.
    • 9 new magic items replacing the old ones.
    • Full colour layout: I don't consider it my best work, but it sure is prettier than the last version, and some of the new artwork is absolutely fantastic!

Enjoy, time for me to turn back the sleeping rhythm once again, followed by a short but needed break!

    Development update: Estalia

Been working on Estalia little by little, and have just finished the Bestiary so far, along with most of the special characters. The book might be a few pages shorter than the last version as I intend to trim down a few sections for better pacing, and remove the many mentions of the Empire currently in it. I will also put more time into editing the text to get rid of any Spanish artifacts that are still in the book from the first time I translated the text, so the grammar should see plenty of improvement as well.

    Current Progress:

    Contents/credits - done.
    Society - done.
    History - done.
    Cult of Myrmidia - done.
    The Inquisition - done.
    Timeline - done.
    Geography - done.
    Bestiary - done.
    Special characters - done.
    Magic Items - done.
    Army list - done.
    Summary - done.

Update 1: Finished the special characters (3 new ones, and 1 old one removed) and the magic items (almost all new), as well as finished editing their history section. I have trimmed it down considerably, but the grammar is improved and all previous inconsistencies should be gone now. The Inquisition and Society sections will also be shorter, but more cohesive.

Update 2: Once again I manage to surprise myself in how fast I can work when I put my mind to it! Everything except for the army list, credits and summary is now finished. If possible, I will try to finish the book tomorrow and have it uploaded by night.

    Details for upcoming Estalia update

Hot on the heels after Norse are Estalia! I want to wait until the High Elf book comes out until I start working on the Wood Elves' rules, so they will yet again take the back seat I'm afraid.
Fortunately, I know there are plenty of Estalia fans here (mostly from Spain, not surprisingly!), so this will hopefully still be rather welcomed news. Estalia haven't seen an update since sometime back in 2011, and there are plenty of things there that needs changing.

The Estalia update will be a bit down-played compared to most of the other updates, with less fantasy-elements (as befits their Inquisitorial setting). I haven't decided on their new units yet, though they will probably be fewer than those of other armies.
The army as a whole will probably land to be somewhat of a mix between the Empire and Dogs of War, though they won't have crazy magics and steampunk elements or a ton of different races to choose from. Rather, they will be a very human-centric army which will rely more on tactics and finesse over "ZOMG, explosions and stuff!".
So for those of you who prefer your armies with less fantasy, this would be a good choice (WAB players apply here), otherwise you will probably be better off just reading the background for fun and playing the Empire.

I will keep this post updated with the progress and planned features. However, right now I need to slow down work on these books for a few weeks to focus on studies, so do not expect this to be as quick an update as the Norse was. I will probably have it out in a month or so, and will be able to pick up the pace again after June 8th.

    Planned features (so far):
    • New (possible) units: War Dogs, Royal Guard, Almogavars. Plans for Seraphim (angels) and Gorgons (armored bulls) existed, but I feel those would be a bit too much for Estalia. Inquisitorial Henchmen, Serfs are gone.
    • New special characters: Isabella Giovanna Luccelli and the High Inquisitor among others. Current special characters will be renamed so as not to be the same as their historical counter-parts.
    • Full colour update (the usual stuff, have tons of new cool artwork for the book).
    • Tercio formation will be added as army special rule.
    • Lore of Myrmidia will be relegated to Bound Spells like the Empire Warrior Priest.
    • Tactical Supremacy will be revised to be more useful.
