Orcs and Goblins 8th Ed 1.01 out now!

Reckon this update should have been out a month ago, but I've really been focused on the main rules as well as working on the Empire, Dwarfs and Vampire Counts lately. But anyway, this update changes the following:

  • New Rare Unit: Orc Brutes (W2 orcs, a mini-Big Boss unit essentially).
  • New Monster Mount: Maw-Crusher (from AoS).
  • You may take one unit of Big 'Uns for each Orc Warboss of the same type in your army.
  • Fix Skullmucha statline bug.
  • Goblins still Fear Elves with an Orc Bully.
  • Fixed Arachnarok points cost for Shamans.
  • Clarified that Size Matters makes Orcs ignore Panic from Goblins and Snotlings.
  • Snotling Pump Wagon strength bug fixed.
  • Snotlings do not counts towards minimum core.
  • Added smoke bombs to Nasty Skulkers.

This will likely be the last complete army book update for 8th ed. 9th ed version will be released soon.

  1. Nice work as always!

I have a couple of questions regarding your works as a whole:

    - Your sources: I assume you base most or all of your work on GW material, but I'd like to see the sources you use in the PDF's themselves, for example on the very last page.

    - Now that you've included AoS units into the books, I think it would be neat if one could somehow see what is from AoS and what is from the Good ole' Days.

I mostly ask because I find it easy to use your books as material for when I talk with my friends about Warhammer, and especially the more obscure factions (Cathay, Estalia, Amazons etc.) need these kinds of dedicated works from GW.

(also because I love telling people how to make their super special Mordheim Warband lore-friendly ;P)

    1. For the most part I credit the original authors by name on the Contents page, listing each and every White Dwarf and WFRP book would be a bit more difficult as I do not always know who has written what particular part. But yes, pretty much everything in the "official" army books are from official GW sources, only a few of the new units have fan-made fluff.

The idea is to include the AoS units in such a way that there are no difference between them and the Old World. Otherwise I will release rules for AoS models in a separate pdf where they do not fit with the original background.

    1. "9th ed version will be released soon." It's the last sentence of the post ;)

  3. Would you consider giving Orcs & Goblins their own miscast table (as per previous editions) as Greenskin magic isn't like 'normal' magic. It could have the potential to be more devestating than normal or even assist the Shaman somehow, in accordance with other Greenskin aspects.

    1. Hmm, maybe. I opted out of it the first time to keep things simple, but I'll look into it.

    1. Those are coming soon as well, at least the Empire book is. The arcane battle altars might have to wait a while though, the Steam Tank pdf will be out shortly after the Empire book is released. The Priest will probably be pushed back a bit though, a lot fo background to go through, and I reckon other players would like to see their finished book before I start pumping out expansions ;)

  5. I remember that in the warhammer roleplaying books I think in the Bretonia suplement there was a kind of weird horse that orcs used as mounts

    1. Yes, there is. They're called Hagranyms. The Hagranyms are the predatory mounts of those Orcs that have made the mountains of Bretonnia their home. The Hagranyms are not just simple animals; many are more intelligent than the Orcs riding them. This is one reason why all attempts by Bretonnians to tame them have failed; the Hagranyms refuse to cooperate and are clever enough to cause all kinds of problems. The other reason is that all Hagranyms are bloodthirsty killers, delighting in slaughter for its own sake as well as for food.

    2. Orcs already have boar cavalry, goblin light cavalry and now also Montrous Cavalry... I for one hardly see a valid reason to include another, near identical type of cavalry in the game. This is not a stereotypical Orc mount either and a long way from justifying it into a generic Orcs & Goblins army list.
I'm just making the point that an "generic" army list might benefit more from leavng some stuff out than including it in some cases. Some things are more appropriate for expansions or special scenario themed lists etc..

  6. -Regarding 'Size Matters', the rule specifically talks about running but not getting destroyed. Perhaps 'Size Matters' should only protect against panic from a goblin unit that has started fleeing or is fleeing through an orc unit. Blaming the goblins riding it for an Arachnorak spider fleeing is one thing, blaming them for said spider being crushed under foot by a Bonegrinder Giant is a different thing altogether.
-You accidentally made the Goblin Wolf Chariot have the same statline and an Orc Boar Chariot in the fluff page section.
-Snotling Pump Wagons should have the same statline as an Orc Boar Chariot. They have far more crew to kill and no exposed beasts to draw it.
-I'm not seeing anything about the ability to take one unit of 'Big Uns for each Orc Warboss in the army. What I still see is that the upgrade is limited to one-per-army. Perhaps the limit could also apply to Black Orcs based on the number of Black Orc bosses/warbosses present and that each Big Boss/Warboss gives access to one Big un unit.

    1. - I'll see about claring it up a bit.
      - Will fix.
      - The pump wagon is much smaller and more rickety, if they have the same stats as the boar chariot there's not much reason to include them.
      - It says "You may upgrade one unit to Big 'Uns for each Orc Warboss of the same type in your army". I will clarify it more in the army list though.

  7. thank you so much, i hadnt held out hope for the brutes, but the maw crusha, and you managed to link them into the established lore! perhaps there is hope for AOS yet.

  8. I know you said that this will likely be the last 8th edition book you do, but could you release an 8th edition version of the rest of the main armies that have yet to receive a full 8th edition book? I know a lot of hard work goes into these books, and I appreciate the work you're doing for the game, but please spare a thought for us peasents that still want to play 8th edition but with better and more balanced armies.

    1. I am still planning on making a Ravening Hordes list version for 8th ed, so you can keep playing that version but with my additions and balance changes without any problem. Only difference is that all the fluff will be left for the 9th ed version.

  10. Great work. I only have one question right now: Which base sizes should I use for the AoS units? The monstrous cavalry is obvious, but if the Brutes are similar to blightkings, do they have 40mm? What about the maw crusher?

    1. I would recommend 40mm bases for the brutes like the blightkings, yes. The mawcrusher would probably fit best on a 100x150mm base.
